- Multiscale models for the fatigue assessment of engineering applications: an experimental investigation of fatigue mechanisms at micro and nanoscale. With recent developments in and miniaturization of electronic devices, the size of elements has been approaching a few nanometers. Currently, i'm devoted to the investigation of mechanisms of fatigue and microstructurally short cracks at the micro and nanoscale, including molecular dynamics studies with the probabilistic distribution of microstructure and grain boundaries, which lead to macroscale fatigue predictive tools in a multiscale modeling context. A systematic multiscale in-situ experimental investigation of fatigue at nano, micro, and macroscale is at the core of this research topic, supported by investigation of fracture at the atomic level and cutting edge DIC analyses. Supported by the Academy of Finland.
- Fatigue of structures. I'm investigating the fatigue assessment of welded structures made of thin plates in marine/ships applications. In particular, welded joints obtained from advanced methods such as "laser hybrid" are considered. Applicability of local criteria to welded joints in those completely different scales is investigated and the development of new approaches is supported by multiscale testing and Digital Imaging Correlation Technique (DIC).
