Professor Sixta Herbert's research interests include the following:

  • Pulping chemistry and technology with special emphasis on dissolving pulps
  • Cellulose chemistry
  • Chemistry of the fractionation of biomass, in particular lignocellulosic biomass
  • Valorization of cellulose to regenerated cellulose fibers
  • Valorization of cellulose to cellulose derivatives
  • Dry-jet wet spinning of cellulose solutions
  • Valorization of hemicelluloses as furanic compounds
  • Isolation and characterization of lignin. Valorization of lignin to monoaromatic structures, to bio-oil and as co-polymer in composite material with cellulose
  • Cellulose textile chemistry
  • Novel dying technologies for cellulose-based textiles.
  • Novel pathways of functionalization of cellulose-based textiles
  • Chemical and mechanical purification of pulps
  • Oxygen delignification of unbleached pulps
  • TCF- and ECF  bleaching techniques
  • Organosolv fractionation methods with particular emphasis on GVL/water pulping of hardwood
