Department of Information and Communications Engineering
The department of Information and Communications Engineering has a strong focus in the ICT area varying from ICT technology to core electrical engineering and its basic phenomena.
Please note! This department page is no longer in use. Department of Communications and Networking merged with the Department of Signal Processing and Acoustics in the beginning of 2023. The new department is called Department of lnformation and Communications Engineering.
The department of Information and Communications Engineering has a strong focus in the ICT area varying from ICT technology to core electrical engineering and its basic phenomena.

Our research is on networked systems and protocols with a focus on transport and application layer aspects. In conjunction with this, we work towards understanding user behavior (mobility, network and service interactions) and traffic patterns in the Internet through measurements and modeling and on the impact of network performance on user quality of experience.

The foundation for strategic research missions following grand research challenges that impact our society.
Studying at the Aalto University gives you many possibilities for your future career. Our programme provide graduates with an ability to work in and between a wide variety of fields.
Having started the first international master's program at Helsinki Unversity of Technology in 1999, the department is still providing a competitive teaching.
The department provides mainly master's and doctoral level education, but also has the responsibility for the courses related to communications and networks (ICT) in the bachelor's level Degree Programme in Automation and Information Technology for native students.
About the programme
The Department of Communications and Networking (Comnet) invites 2 - 4 exceptionally qualified Master's students to join the department's honours programme in each academic year. Students admitted to the honours programme are associated to one of the department's research groups, and will have the opportunity for part-time employment during semesters in research-related work. In summer the students have the possibility of entering into full-time employment in the department's competitive summer internship programme. The honours students will also have access to the department's research facilities (wireless and networking lab, and computing services).
Who can apply
To qualify, a student must have Communications Engineering as major in their M.Sc. degree studies and show good progress in their studies. The honours status is granted for one year at a time for a maximum of two years. Students starting their 1st year or continuing the second year Communications Engineering MSc studies can apply to the honours programme.
How to apply
Instructions how to apply for the academic year 2019-2020 honours programme will be published here later.
More information
For further information of the programme, please contact Coordinator Mika Nupponen [email protected], regarding the application process and practical arrangements, please contact HR Coordinator Katja Korpinurmi [email protected].
Excellent Communications engineering students can have their studies tailored towards pursuing a doctoral degree and start working in the department’s research groups already during their Master’s studies. In practice, doctoral track students are included in research groups at the Department of Communications and Networking and receive top-level individual supervision from professors. Selection to the doctoral track is done based mainly on the study success during the 1st fall term. The application period is continuous.
