CHEMARTS – New dimensions for the forest

Would you be interested of, for example, gloves that can produce clean drinking water? CHEMARTS brings together biomaterials, chemical engineers and design students. Their encounters sprout ideas that can make the world a better place.

CHEMARTS is the long-term collaboration project of two Aalto University schools: the School of Chemical Engineering (CHEM) and the School of Arts, Design and Architecture (ARTS). These schools combined forces in 2011 with the aim of researching bio-based materials in an innovative way and creating new concepts for their advanced use. The core values of CHEMARTS are the sustainable use of natural resources, experimental working methods, and respectful cross-pollination of design and material research.

CHEMARTS arranges multidisciplinary study courses and a Summer School for degree students, thesis projects, and workshops for elementary and high school students. It also participates in externally funded research projects.

Study courses 2020-2022:

CHEM-A1610 Design Meets Biomaterials (3-5 cr)

CHEM-C3320 Plant Biomass (5 cr)

MUO-E0101 CHEMARTS Summer School 2.0 (5 cr)

CHEM-E0180 CHEMARTS Project (5-10 cr)

CHEM3040 CHEMARTS minor program

Thoughts about the course

Aalto-yliopisto, Otaniemi stories: Andreas Lindberg, tohtoriopiskelija, biotuotteiden ja biotekniikan laitos / kuvaaja: Sinikoski

"An especially inspiring observation from the CHEMARTS courses has been how engineering and design students together familiarise themselves with biomaterials. The way with which they approach challenges and opportunities from, so to speak, outside the box has already given rise to many excellent projects and innovations. I’m proud of having been given the opportunity to participate in the creation of a substrate, which enables Aalto to sprout inventions that are of significance to the environment."

Andreas Lindberg, doctoral candidate, Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems
