Teemu Malmi appointed to Jaakko Honko Professorship

Professor of Accounting, Teemu Malmi, has been appointed to the Jaakko Honko Professorship at the School of Business as of 1 January 2015.

Teemu Malmi began his career at the Helsinki School of Economics before taking up the position of Professor of Accounting at Aalto University's School of Business.

Professor Jaakko Honko (1922-2006) first undertook a professorship at the Helsinki School of Economics in 1960. He later fulfilled the roles of Rector and Chancellor of the School from 1969 to 1989. This new professorship has been established in honour of Jaakko Honko's tireless efforts in advancing and promoting development in Finnish society and the economy.

In addition to his work in Finland, Honko gained international recognition during the time he spent as a visiting professor at many of the world's leading universities. He was the recipient of 5 honorary doctorates during his lifetime; in Finland, Sweden, Germany, and in Russia. Jaakko Honko also served on the boards of many academic bodies in Europe and the USA.

Aalto University established the Jaakko Honko professorship in recognition of the promotion of scientific research at its School of Business by the Foundation for Economic Education (LSR). Professor Honko played a vital role in the activities of the LSR. As such, the Jaakko Honko professorship symbolises the long-standing cooperation between the LSR and Aalto University, as well as their common goals in the advancement of economic research and education in Finland. The Foundation for Economic Education has consistently supported the development of Finnish expertise in the field of business and economics for 95 years.

Teemu Malmi was awarded his doctorate from the Helsinki School of Economics in 1997. He has worked as Professor of Accounting at Aalto University School of Business since 2001 and as the Head of the Department of Accounting since 2013.

Malmi's research focuses on cost and profitability accounting, performance measurement, management systems, and the implementation of strategies. His research has been published in the leading publications in his field and he is a member of the editorial boards of many international journals.

Malmi's work as a trainer and educator sees him occupy several teaching positions in open and corporate training programmes. He has experience of management roles in both publicly listed and unlisted companies.
