Aalto Doctoral Programme in Chemical Engineering
Doctoral candidiates graduating from this programme are equipped with professional skills and knowledge required for demanding academic research and teaching positions and are trained for expert, development and management positions of the information society. High-level research is a prerequisite for doctoral studies and research training.
The aim of doctoral studies is that the student
• acquires profound knowledge of his or her research field and its social significance, obtaining the necessary skills to independently apply the scientific methods of the respective field and produce new scientific knowledge;
• obtains thorough knowledge of the development and research methods of his or her research field;
• possess a sufficient level of expertise in the theory of science and other fields related to his or her research field.
Structure of degree
The Doctor of Science (Technology) degree consists of an approved doctoral dissertation and theoretical studies (40 ECTS), comprising two modules: scientific principles and practices studies (5-20 ECTS) as well as research field studies (20-35 ECTS). The completion of a doctoral degree equals four years of full-time studies.
Content of studies
The main focus of doctoral studies is on research work, the evaluation of research results and publishing in peer-reviewed journal series. In a nutshell, the goal of doctoral education is to provide doctoral candidates with the capacity to conduct research that produces new knowledge and to gain professional experience as a qualified researcher.
This learning process culminates in a doctoral dissertation and its public defence under the supervision of examiners who are experts in the field of the research. Doctoral education at the School of Chemical Engineering resembles an apprenticeship because the research work is conducted in close collaboration with your thesis advisor(s) and supervising professor. You will spend 3-4 years working intensively on a specific research topic, and completing your intellectual piece of work, i.e. doctoral dissertation. Along the road, you will participate in theory courses, seminars, and research collaboration activities and other departmental tasks as well as potentially teach undergraduates.
