Modern education race: Digital education, Massive open online courses, Microdegrees

Arto Hellas

Abstract:

Universities that have invested in digital technology and pedagogy are well ahead in the modern education race, where high-quality education is a "freely" available commodity for everyone. But what is really at stake here? Who dictates what is offered and what is not, do online courses give an accurate image of University studies, and should every University participate in this race? This talk presents experiences from a decade of digitalization of education, recruiting students through MOOCs, and future directions of online education including opportunities in learning analytics.
