Description

Smart Systems Integration is a multi-disciplinary field, which requires contributions from several fields of the traditional engineering disciplines. Emphasis is placed on electrical engineering subjects, with focus on the electrical interfaces, signal processing, sustainable electronics and the design for reliability. Mechanical engineering topics are included to understand the functionality and design of sensors and actuators with the aid of multiphysics modelling, as well the assembly and packaging of devices. Computer engineering contributes to the understanding of data processing and connectivity through the Internet of Things/Everything. Bioengineering topics are crucial for the teaching of biomedical smart systems, and knowledge of chemical engineering topics is considered for the manufacture of micro/ nano systems being essential sub-components of Smart Systems. Finally, system-level design, assembly and integration of these disparate parts of technology will be critical for the successful production of Smart Systems.

The main learning outcomes of SSIs are:

  • Advanced knowledge in microsystems technology, microelectronics, functional and physical integration, coding and their interplay
  • Ability to define, model, and design a Smart System that is intended to solve a given complex practical and theoretical problem
  • Expertise in the state of the art research to push existing frontiers in the field
  • Skills to perform a critical assessment and choice of the required analysing tools, methods, models and calculations
  • Transferable skills, e.g. entrepreneurship, scientific writing, communication, collaboration and leadership in inter-disciplinary, multicultural and international teams.

Tuition fees and scholarships

The participation costs (tuition fees) for self-funding students are:

4,250 Euros per Academic Year (EU Applicants)
8,500 Euros per Academic Year (for non-EU Applicants)

SSIs programme envisages scholarships for applicants from partner countries and from programme countries. All applications will be considered for the Erasmus+ Scholarship award and scholarships are awarded to best ranked applicants. Read more in the programme web page.

Structure of studies

The 120 ECTS SSIs MSc Programme is studied over four semesters, the students will spend one semester at each of the three universities. A detailed description of the programme tracks and modules is available in the programme web page.

The programme offers an innovative, integrated and holistic curriculum with contributions from international and industrial partners and embedded with entrepreneurial, industrial and personal development schemes that are not found in other academic offers, limited by the academic capabilities of the individual institutions. Comparable degree programmes found in other academic offers are instead focusing on selected parts of a microsystem, microelectronics or smart systems technology.

  • The graduates will acquire a fundamental understanding of the fabrication processes currently used in microfabrication, MEMS and IC so that the design tolerances and other practical challenges are considered equally. The degree programme will further train the graduates with specialised knowledge and skills related to the challenges of packaging and system integration of MEMS components, sensors and electronics. Entrepreneurial skills, including knowledge of the market and user requirements as well as product manufacturing is taken care of through formal teaching and industrial talks and visits.

Specialisations

Students of the programme will study the first semester at Aalto University, second semester at University of South-Eastern Norway and third semester at Budapest University of Technology and Economics. On the fourth semester, students write their Master’s thesis at one of the three universities.

Internationalisation

The programme is a joint degree programme. This means that you will study at three universities and in three different countries. The study environment in the programme is strongly international and studies are conducted in multicultural groups.

Aalto University is international by nature, welcoming thousands of degree and exchange students from abroad every year. These students join the diverse Aalto community not only through studies but also via multiple free time events, activities and celebrations around the campus. Active tutoring programmes and support services work tirelessly to help international students integrate into Nordic culture and welcome them at home in Finland.

Further study opportunities

The programme qualifies for doctoral studies (Doctor of Science in an applicable field).

Career opportunities

Programme graduates enjoy excellent career opportunities in the public and private sectors, especially in a future full of autonomous systems and technological advancement. Thanks to the tight-knit connections to the industry, the chances to land a job through course projects, internships, research or thesis work are high. Further, graduates have all the necessary entrepreneurial skills to found and build their own companies as well.

Aalto University has well-established career services through which you can get employed in Finland and abroad. Aalto students tend to find good positions with ease upon their graduation. An active entrepreneurship community is also present at Aalto, which can help as a springboard for founding your company. Finally, if an academic career is of interest, the SSIs programme is a great foundation for doctoral studies and post-doc positions.

Research focus

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation offer excellent education and top-quality research conditions where scientists and engineers together develop new methods, devices, and systems in the fields of Power Systems and Energy Conversion, Control, Robotics and Autonomous Systems and Health Technology.

Co-operation with other parties

Aalto University is among the top-ranked universities in the world related to industry collaboration. As a graduate, you can leverage on our connections.
