It is a new-generation learning journey that equips you with the tools to meet these challenges, and to launch a world-class career at the forefront of this most dynamic and fast-evolving space. The programme leverages a unique global network and unparalleled expertise.

The programme empowers you to

  • master the complete array of conversion and storage technologies
  • build leading-edge business and entrepreneurial skills and
  • leverage a unique global network at the tipping point in sustainable global energy

Language of instruction

The language of instruction of the programme is English.

Tuition fees and scholarships

All students admitted to Master's Programme in Energy Storage are eligible for scholarships and liable for tuition fees according to EIT InnoEnergy's tuition fee & scholarship scheme. Students are not liable for paying tuition fees to Aalto University or eligible for Aalto University scholarships. EIT InnoEnergy scholarship scheme is subject to annual updates. See the programme website for more information.

Structure of studies

The Master’s in Energy Storage is a unique two-year learning journey. It is a comprehensive deep dive into the full array of energy conversion and storage technologies from electrochemical (battery) to thermal, thermochemical, energy carriers connection to built environment.

You choose between three European universities, changing over between years one and two to complete semesters in two different institutions.

In year one, you complete a full curriculum of subjects that ground you in the core technical areas of energy storage, while laying down your management understanding and business innovation mindset. The first year constitutes the active learning cycle of the Master’s degree. Academic and theoretic activities are deeply enriched and given real-world context by interactive resources, hands-on activities and industry field trips that expose you to energy storage in action. During the first year, you complete a project in a topic related to energy storage. You will be expected to articulate and facilitate the relation between energy technologies and models for the analysis and management in technological and economical terms; to enlarge the engineer conceptual framework in order to be able to think about technology in its context. The curricular component explores important issues like viability analysis, economic and sustainability analysis.

The second year is your chance to specialise (see below).

The curriculum at Aalto University is published on the programme page in student portal Into.

Specialisations

The second year is your chance to specialise. You can deepen your expertise on one of the storage technologies with industrial project and a master thesis work. In addition, you can draw wider image of the role of storage in the energy transition. With the support of expert faculty and industry practitioners, you complete your Master’s thesis at your second university.

Internationalisation

The programme is a double degree programme with integrated, mandatory geopraphical mobility. This means that you will study at two European universities and in two different countries. Upon fulfilment of all degree requirements, you receive two degrees: one from the 1st year and another one from the 2nd year university.

Student Albert Rehnberg ended up to his dream programme by accident

Albert Rehnberg selected the double degree Master’s in Energy storage at EIT InnoEnergy, because it sounded the most interesting to him, but it ended up being his dream programme.

Further study opportunities

Graduates of the programme are awarded Master of Science (Technology) degree which grants them a great foundation for doctoral level studies at Aalto University or internationally. In addition, a similar degree is awarded by the other institution where the student completed the programme, widening the further study and career opportunities internationally.

Career opportunities

As the energy system continues to decarbonise and decentralise, it becomes more complex which will inevitably require a new type of expert. The demand for skilled workers is only going to increase and more people will need to be trained, potentially for jobs that don’t even exist yet! The energy storage market could create 100,000 new jobs every year. Overall, storage will play a significant role at the energy transition. New talents can be working within the energy industry but also at chemical, metallurgical and food industry. By undertaking EIT InnoEnergy’s Master’s in Energy Storage, graduates are putting themselves on the path to career success; the master’s in energy storage delivers that new expert. Graduates get a comprehensive understanding of the energy storage landscape, placing them at the front of the queue for any potential jobs in the sector.

Research focus

The students in Energy Storage programme interact with researchers investigating, among other topics, wide range of energy storage technologies and systems, such as: batteries, hydrogen production, thermal energy systems, grid balancing and synthetic fuels. You get to work among the leading experts with prof. Tanja Kallio and prof. Annukka Santasalo-Aarnio .

Co-operation with other parties

Master's Programme in Energy Storage is implemented by Aalto University in cooperation with its European partner universities and EIT InnoEnergy. EIT InnoEnergy is supported by European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union. Education and training are at heart of EIT innovation model. The vision of EIT is to become a leading European initiative that empowers innovators and entrepreneurs to develop world-class solutions to societal challenges and create growth and skilled jobs.
