Windows – Monthly Updates
Microsoft publishes monthly updates to the Windows operating system on the second Tuesday of every month. These contain fixes and security updates. You should install these updates as soon as possible, to keep your computer secure and reliable.
Aalto IT publishes the updates to all computers 2 days after the second Tuesday of every month (a.k.a. Patch Tuesday). This two-day period is used for testing the updates for any compatibility issues.
Your Windows PC will show you dialogs and notifications when the updates are ready to be installed. First, you should see the Software changes are required notification:

When the installation deadline approaches, you will see different notification windows that also gives you an opportunity to immediately install the updates and restart.

You can check the installation deadline in the Software Center by clicking the notification, or by opening it from the Start Menu. You can also install the updates from the Software Center. Note that most security updates need the computer to be restarted before they are applied! This restart happens automatically at the installation deadline if it hasn’t been completed before that.

When the installation deadline is reached, updates are installed automatically in the background, and there will be a notification that informs you about the upcoming restart:

Please note that Windows updates will install only via Software Center. The Windows Update portion of the Windows Settings app will not allow you to install or control (postpone, pause or defer) the updates anymore, but you can still use it to view the update history.
