Taxation and social security on International assignment

The instructions on this page are written assuming that an employee is entitled to the Finnish social security and is taxed primarily in Finland before the assignment starts. The background of the person leaving for an International assignment as well as the legislation of the host country may cause changes to the instructions. In these cases, please contact Finnish National Board of Taxes ( on taxation and The Social Insurance Institution of Finland ( on social security.

Since of January 1, 2010, following the new Universities Act, changes have taken place in taxation and social security of those working on an International assignment.

Remote Work Abroad

The International Assignment Policy is not applicable when an Aalto employee is only temporarily working remote from abroad. An Aalto employee is considered working remote, when the reason for the stay is something other than employee’s role or Assignment (for example, Aalto employee accompanies spouse on an International Assignment). In this case, the task does not require working abroad as the work could also be carried out in Finland.

Because the changes in taxation and social security are not taken into account in the old remote work agreements, those planning to work abroad should confirm the present situation for their part well before leaving abroad and contact, if necessary, the home department/unit HR coordinator or the school HR manager.
