Exchange mailing lists - joining and leaving them
A mailing list is a special tool designed for the distribution of email messages, which makes it possible to send email messages, at one time, to the personal emailbox of every member on the list. On Exchange mailing lists, the recipients include only @aalto.fi addresses, and the address of these lists is always [list's name]@aalto.fi.
Some of the Exchange mailing lists are ‘open mailing lists’, which users can join or leave, at their discretion, when they wish to do so. Users can join or leave Exchange mailing lists via webmail (https://outlook.office.com).
Joining an Exchange mailing list
1. Log in to Webmail at https://outlook.office.com
2. Click on the wheel icon in the top right corner, and select Options from the menu that opens.
3. Go to the bar in the left corner of the view that opens, and select General.
4. Under General, select Distribution groups.
5. Under the heading Groups I belong to, click the Join button (see image below).

6. In the search field, type the name of the mailing list you wish to join and click on the image of the magnifying glass.
7. To join the mailing list in question, double-click on the name of the mailing list shown among the search results, and click Join in the window that opens.
8. Once you have successfully joined the mailing list, you will return to the search window. After that, select Close. (If you do not have the right to join a mailing list or if it is not open to be joined, the system will notify you of this.)
9. The mailing list you just joined is now displayed on the list called Distribution groups I belong to.
Leaving an Exchange mailing list
1. Log in to webmail at https://outlook.office.com
2. Click on the wheel icon in the top right corner, and select Options from the menu that opens.
3. Go to the bar in the left corner of the view that opens, and select General.
4. Under General, select Distribution groups.
5. Under the heading Groups I belong to, you can see all the lists you belong to as a member. On the list, double-click on the mailing list you wish to leave.
6. In the window that opens, select Leave.
7. You will receive the following warning: "Warning, Are you sure you want to leave the group", click Yes to leave. (If you do not have the right to leave the list or if a user cannot leave the list by themselves, the system will notify you of this.)
8. You have successfully left the list once the mailing list is no longer displayed in the list called Distribution groups I belong to.
