ABOUT us

Aalto University Digital Design Laboratory, ADDLAB, is a research organization initiated by the Aalto University's School of Engineering and School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Through design driven research and development, and open collaboration, and its multidisciplinary platform, ADDLAB utilizes the potential of today's digital technologies to develop functioning applications, production methods and products. Open to researchers and students, ADDLAB is a platform for vital experimentation, exploration, creativity and provocation, within which researchers and students expand their knowledge and foster future practices in design and engineering as well as architecture, art, education and business. ADDLAB facilitates and participates in interdisciplinary dialogue and actively collaborates with other university departments as well as industries, companies, researchers and experts.

ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING

ADDLAB, as one of the globally leading centres in the field of Additive Manufacturing technologies, offers great possibilities to conduct both academic and applied research. ISO / ASTM52900 – 15 classifies additive manufacturing into seven processing categories. These include, binder jetting, directed energy deposition, material extrusion, material jetting, powder bed fusion, sheet lamination, and vat photopolymerization.

ADDLab retains equipment in all the above-mentioned categories and continually develops new experimental equipment in order to further expand the prospects of digital manufacturing.

EDUCATION

ADDLAB strives to provide workshops and educational events for students from different disciplines within Aalto University, as well as other educational institutions. We combine the skills and contributions of students and faculty from all Schools of Aalto, and thus far more than 500 individuals have participated in the courses provided through ADDLAB.

Every year more than 70 students take Additive Manufacturing courses within their master's degree studies. Additionally, other Aalto courses utilize ADDLAB within the practical aspects of their course projects as a prototyping and production resource. ADDLAB regularly provides an introductory course into 3D printing (ENG-A1009-Practical Work Training with 3D-printers) to familiarize the students with Additive Manufacturing technologies and to grant students access to the facilities.

COOPERATION

ADDLAB co-operates with multiple stakeholders in various fields such as design, engineering and production in both academia and industry, as well as with the society. The most common co-operation platforms are established on the basis of common projects and research interests. Smaller scale collaborations are settled based on bilateral research conducted for a pre-specified target. To join our multidisciplinary team contact us for further information.
