Two Ph.D. students for multimodal neuroimaging of emotions and cognition in social contexts

Two full-time Ph.D. student positions are open in the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering at Aalto University, Espoo, Finland.

The work involves use of naturalistic stimuli (movies and narratives) in neuroimaging studies of emotions and cognition in social contexts.

One of the Ph.D. students will engage in development of multimodal neuroimaging data analysis methods. The neuroimaging methods include functional magnetic resonance imaging, magnetoencephalogaphy, and electroencephalography, as well as compelementary behavioral measures. Ideally this candidate should have a background in engineering, physics, mathematics or equivalent, and have skills in Matlab and Python. The ideal candidate has a master's degree, but it is also possible to start as a M.Sc. student working on masters/diploma thesis.

The other Ph.D. student should have background in psychology, cognitive science or equivalent, and a keen interest in studies of the neural basis of emotions and cognition in social contexts. The student should have or develop in the context of the project strong enough computational and programming skills to be able to participate in data analysis with the engineering student.

Both students are anticipated to participate in empirical data collection and writing of manuscripts to international peer reviewed journals. The work involves international collaboration including visits. Fluency in English as well as ability to work as a member of a team is expected. The students will be supervised by Prof. Iiro P. Jääskeläinen & Dr. Yoni Levy.

What you get

The expected duration of doctoral studies is four years, but a contract is first made for one year, and the extension is subject to advance of studies and research. The starting salary for a doctoral student position is approx. 2 500 € with pay raises according to progress in studies and publications. In addition to the salary, the contract includes occupational health care and other benefits, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system.

The annual total workload of teaching staff at Aalto University is 1 624 hours. The position is located at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus right next to the Aalto University metro station, 15 min by metro from downtown Helsinki.
