Tenure Track Professor in Leadership and Organizing

The vacancy at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management is open to outstanding individuals with strong research and teaching interest. Ideal applicants enjoy intellectual leadership and strive for academic excellence and inspiring people around them. The call is primarily open on Assistant Professor level. However, exceptional candidates at other levels will also be considered.

Your role and goal
The tenure track position in Leadership and Organizing covers research areas in the intersection of leadership research and organization studies. The new professorship complements our department-wide strengths of studying the creation and transformation of technology-based business. The professorship advances the current understanding of organizing and leadership in contemporary work organizations, especially in the context of technology business.  

We expect that research and education of leadership in the current socio-technical reality, characterized by the digital transformation of business, and self-organizing teams, will contribute to management theories and addresses relevant societal problems. The professorship can thus complement business and management research and education in technology-intensive contexts by focusing on, for example, emergent organizing and engineering leadership in the early stages of nascent enterprises as well as in established technology-based businesses. Applicable disciplines are organizational psychology, organization studies, sociology, and philosophy, complemented by a strong understanding of technology, especially information technologies. 

Topics covered in the professorship can include, but are not limited to, the following areas of research on leadership and technology in organizations: 

  • leadership and organizing in technology entrepreneurship and startup operations 
  • the impact of information technology on organizations and leadership
  • people analytics in technology entrepreneurship, 
  • leadership in emerging organizations pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities,
  • the role of leaders, leadership styles, and culture in technology-based business. 
  • leading change and organizational transformation,
  • organizational psychology, distributed teams and remote work,
  • well-being in creative work, as well as digital transformation of work.

Your colleagues and network
The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management conducts world-class research and provides impactful education on creating and transforming technology-based business. We are one of Europe’s leading university departments in technology entrepreneurship, focusing especially on strategic management and venturing, operations and service management, and entrepreneurial leadership. In total, we are more than 120 persons working in the department, including 20 professors, over 30 senior and postdoc researchers, and a large number of doctoral students.

The faculty at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management is well known for its publications in leading management journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, as well as the leading journals in the core research areas of the department such as Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, Research Policy, and Journal of Operations Management in entrepreneurship, innovation, and operations and service management. The department conducts empirical research in close collaboration with the leading technology firms in Finland and Europe. Your experience and ambitions
The applicants are expected to conduct state-of-the-art research in the area and develop new research programs with international visibility. The teaching load in these positions is negotiable but is planned to include two courses per year. In addition, the tasks are planned to include participation in Master’s and doctoral thesis supervision as well as contributing to the department’s research, teaching, and outreach activities.  

The applicants should hold a doctorate in a discipline relevant for this position or receive the degree before the beginning of the contract. The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research, teaching, academic leadership experience and the activity in the scientific community. The evaluation of applicants will be supported by bibliometric analyses using e.g. ISI Web of Science.
