The Educational Technology Development and Integration team (EDIT) develops and maintains technology used in teaching at the Department of Computer Science, and supports teachers in using it. Our main product is A+, an open source learning environment based on micro-services. A+ enables automatic grading of exercises and deploying online course materials from git version control. A+ and its main backend, the exercise grading service, are implemented with the Python Django web framework. You’ll find additional information about A+ at https://apluslms.github.io/.
We are now looking for a
System architect for drawing A+ future
The main focus and goal in your work will be to find the meaningful technical solutions and make the decisions on technology choices and software architecture needed for A+ to be a product suitable for national-level educational use. What we aim for is a highly scalable MOOC platform. You will have the chance to make an impact by developing high-quality and modern educational technology to be used in Computer Science teaching in Finnish Higher Education. In this role, you will also represent the Aalto University perspective in the collaboration with other universities.
Your network and team
You will act as the responsible person for A+ future strategy in the EDIT team and as a peer to the product owner. You will collaborate with other EDIT team members, with IT specialists at department and Aalto level, as well as colleagues in other universities.
Your experience and ambitions
We expect you to have experience of large web development projects and DevOps, as well as experience, skills and motivation to lead and mentor a team of technical developers. You will need deep understanding of modern service-oriented architecture and up-to-date knowledge of modern web development trends. To successfully master these, you should have a Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field. Excellent communication skills are essential in the position; spoken and written skills in Finnish are an advantage.
What we offer
This is a splendid opportunity to affect the educational technology genre at Aalto University and Finnish national level, especially in Computer Science. Aalto and the Department of Computer Science have committed to the project with long-term goals. For a start, the position is fixed-term until 31.12.2023. With successful deployment of the new architecture, the position will be continued with another two years, until 31.12.2025. After the 5-year period, the situation will be re-evaluated and new responsibilities may be available. The position requires deep knowledge in the field, which will be taken into account when defining the compensation.
