Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business. We are committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. Aalto University has six schools with nearly 11 000 students and nearly 400 professors. Our campus is located in Espoo, Finland.
Aalto University’s School of Chemical Engineering, Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems, invites applications for
Staff Scientist in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
We are looking for a candidate with solid experimental background in XPS and other ultrahigh vacuum methods and/or spectroscopic methods.
Your role would be to manage the daily operations of the XPS instrument, teach researchers to analyze data and actively develop the technique and to support academic research. In addition to being responsible for the XPS, the staff scientist would also be responsible for another surface sensitive UHV equipment; Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD). The third task of the candidate would be to advance the use of the Raman spectroscopy techniques available at the department. The department has both a confocal Raman spectrometer and a UV Resonance Raman spectrometer.
It is important to actively develop the techniques by means of academic research and actively collaborate with researchers at the Bio2 department and the academic community wider. Spreading the knowledge of the possibilities of the methods within the school is also one key task. Utilization and maintenance of the key infrastructure is carried out in good co-operation with academic and technical staff and thus good communication skills are essential.
The scientific environment
The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (BIO2) is an international leader in basic and applied research for the development of advanced materials from natural resources, including the entire value chain. The department uses its interdisciplinary approach to design and develop high performance fiber materials, nanomaterials and hybrids as well as functional interfaces derived therefrom. One of the key research areas in the Bio2 department is the development of advanced lignocellulosic materials from nanocellulose or nanolignin. The XPS instrument at Bio2 is customized for soft materials, but it can be utilized in many other surface studies too, e.g. in contamination & failure analyses; characterization of thin films, heterogeneous surface structures as well as in metallurgy and polymer science.
Your experience and ambitions
We look for applicants who have,
- PhD in physics, chemistry, or related field
- >3-years’ experience in XPS measurements after PhD
- Experience in other spectroscopy methods, particularly in Raman is considered an asset
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to communicate with scientific peers, students and the public
- Experience in training and instruction of students
- Solid publication record in peer-reviewed journals
Salary and contract terms
Staff Scientist position can be either fixed-term or permanent. The salary is based on Aalto University’s salary system. The contract includes occupational health benefits and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The position is located in the Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Espoo.
