Aalto University School of Engineering invites applications for
RESEARCH ASSISTANT FOR THE SAFETY ANALYSIS OF REMOTE MARITIME PILOTING IN AN INTELLIGENT FAIRWAY
The maritime industry is currently being disrupted with the introduction of smart shipping concepts (e.g. autonomous ships). In Aalto Marine and Arctic Technology, this has created active research on the development of advance/smart ship concepts and the analysis and management of the risks and overall safety linked to these concepts. Therefore, we are now looking for a research assistant interested in developing her/his skills in the research related to the analysis of risk with the use of the Formal Safety Assessment by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), particularly in the tasks of the Cost-Benefit Assessment. Furthermore, the researcher should support the documentation of the project results related to the Risk management of remote pilotage operation. The position is within the Research group on Safe and Efficient Marine Systems and Experience at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (Marine and Arctic Technology).
The selected candidate should carry out tasks to identify and evaluate different cost-benefit assessment methods that can be integrated into the formal safety assessment framework. In the context of the risk management related to the remote pilotage operation, the selected candidate will carry out the documenting and support on the preparing of deliverables with the provided materials. This work is developed as part of the project Sea4Value (s4v).
The call is open for candidates with a wide range of backgrounds. As the research is related to diverse topics, the research assistant will have the opportunity to get familiar with the topics related to cost-benefit assessment, risk management and remote pilotage operation. Thus, a good understanding of the processes for risk management is a plus. A suitable background may come from mechanical engineering, marine engineering, naval architecture, industrial engineering or related disciplines in maritime formation and education.
The position is at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the expected duration of work contract is three months. The salary is according to the salary system of Aalto University.
