Professor in Wood Architecture

The call is open for Associate and Full Professor levels of the Aalto University tenure track system. The position will begin the 1st of August 2021 or as agreed. The professorship is full-time and, depending on the positioning on the tenure track, with either a fixed-term or permanent contract. Please find more information about the Tenure Track system here:

Wood architecture is an important teaching and research subject at the Department of Architecture, integrating high-quality building design and innovative technical solutions with a growing emphasis on sustainability (e.g. carbon neutrality and circular economy). The department has a long history in teaching and research of wood architecture, for instance through a special Wood Program. The faculty and the students have received several international awards for their accomplishments The open position in Professor in Wood Architecture is aiming at continuing and strengthening the teaching and research of wood architecture, particularly as wood as building material provides potential solutions for climate change mitigation.

Your role and goals

Main tasks of the professor include teaching and research / artistic and or practice-based work in the field of wood architecture, as well as development and administrative work at the department. The professor works in a multidisciplinary collaboration with the other schools of Aalto University, other universities as well as research institutes and industry of the field. In addition to teaching courses of wood architecture, the tasks of the professor include developing innovative design methodologies and building methods in the field, together with other actors in the sectors of architecture, such as design of public buildings, housing design and renovation. The professor is also expected to develop and lead research projects and raise external funding for these activities. Research and/or innovative artistic work should provide input to teaching at least at the BA- and MA-levels (first and second cycles) and possibly also doctoral levels.

Your experience and ambitions

Profound expertise in the field of the professorship is necessary, and international experience and familiarity with the Nordic countries is of advantage. The candidate should have experience in university-level teaching and architectural design practice. Experience in leading research projects and academic leadership positions is an asset. Completed pedagogical studies and a doctoral degree in Architecture or in some other relevant field is valued.

The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research and/or artistic or practice-based merits, teaching merits, as well as academic leadership skills and activity in the scientific community. Aalto University will use external reviewers to support the evaluation of applicants during the recruitment process.

The salary is determined based on applicant's experience and qualifications. Activities of the department are mainly located in the Otaniemi campus of Aalto University in Espoo (Helsinki metropolitan area).
