Professor (Artistic practices) position in Production Design for Film and Television
The successful candidate will be appointed for a fixed 5-year term with the title of Professor (Artistic Practices). The position will begin in September 2020 or as agreed.
The position is located at the Department of Film, Television and Scenography / ELO Film School Finland. The film school was founded in 1959, and it is one of the eldest film schools in Europe and in the world.
ELO consists of two degree programmes. The Degree Programme in Film and Television offers education in seven areas of specialization: directing, screenwriting, film and television producing, film editing, cinematography, sound design, and documentary filmmaking. The Degree Programme in Design for Theatre, Film and Television offers three areas of specialization: production design, design for performing arts and costume design. In addition, the Department offers education in history of film and courses in research skills. The Department endorses practice-based research with questions emerging from experiences in artistic and production work. The research activities aim at producing new theoretical and practical knowledge, insights and approaches to filmmaking and scenography. The Department collaborates closely with the University of the Arts Helsinki and with other national and international higher education institutions specialized in arts. Your role and goals
The titles Professor (Artistic Practices), Professor (Design Practices) and Professor (Architectural Practices) provide Aalto University’s departments with the possibility to hire highly qualified professionals to open new areas of teaching and research and/or artistic work, and re-evaluate and dynamically develop a field.
In general, Professors (Artistic/Design/Architectural Practices) are expected to exercise and guide research and/or artistic activity, to provide education based on it, to handle the tradition and follow the advances of their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to takepart in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field. We expect the professors to teach many of the courses themselves, but we also encourage inviting visiting professionals to share their knowledge on contemporary topics.
Professor (Artistic practices) in Production Design for Film and Television will focus especially on the artistic future challenges in production design. The main challenge of the position is to provide expertise in the traditional production design practices and in integrating latest digital methods in the field of production design.
The tasks of the professor include teaching, artistic activity and research in the field, as well as development and administrative work in the department. The professor will co-operate with the other teaching and research staff of the department, other departments and other Art Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences, as most of the BA and MA courses are organized together with other disciplines. She/he will also work tightly with the field, build collaborations within Aalto and create and maintain national, Nordic and international collaboration networks in the field. Furthermore, the professor will participate in developing the major and the department in close collaboration with faculty of the department.
Professor (Artistic Practices) is considered a professor position with Aalto-level requirements and external evaluation. Artistic qualifications that are comparable to a doctoral degree and significant expertise in artistic and professional work as well as teaching are required for obtaining Professor (Artistic Practices) position. Furthermore, a commitment to develop the field through artistic and professional work and teaching activities is necessitated.
Artistic excellence will be emphasized in the selection process of Professor (Artistic Practices) in Production Design for Film and Television: the applicant is expected to have significant artistic qualifications and wide practical experience in the field. We expect the candidate to be familiar with all aspects of film production design. Experience in television design is appreciated. In addition, experience in international co-productions is considered as an asset.
We expect the candidate to have knowledge of the relevant traditional, contemporary and emerging production design technologies and methods. Furthermore, the applicant needs to have deep understanding of the theory, practice and technical demands of the field and a strong and well-articulated vision regarding the field and how it should be developed.
The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of the following areas: artistic merits, teaching, co-operative skills and activity and leadership in artistic or academic community. Research and publication activity is considered to be an asset, but it is not required.
The position requires excellent command of both written and spoken English. Finnish and Swedish language skills are considered as advantages.
