Professor (Artistic practices) position in Film Editing

The successful candidate will be appointed for a fixed 5-year term with the title of Professor (Artistic Practices). The position will begin in August 2021 or as agreed. The position is located in the Department of Film, Television and Scenography / ELO Film School Finland. The film school was founded in 1959, and it is one of the eldest film schools in Europe and the world.

ELO consists of two degree programmes. The Degree Programme in Film and Television offers education in seven majors (areas of specialisation): film directing, screenwriting, film and television producing, film editing, cinematography, film sound design, and documentary film. The Degree Programme in Design for Theatre, Film and Television offers three areas of specialisation: production design, design for performing arts, and costume design. Besides, the Department offers education film history and courses in research skills. The Department endorses practice-based research with questions emerging from experiences in artistic and production work. The research activities aim at producing new theoretical and practical knowledge, insights and approaches to filmmaking. The Department collaborates closely with the University of the Arts Helsinki and with other national and international higher education institutions specialised in arts. For more information, see

Your role and goals

The title Professor (Artistic Practices) provides Aalto University’s departments with the possibility to hire highly qualified professionals to develop their areas of teaching, research and/or artistic work, and to re-evaluate and dynamically advance their field.

In general, professors (Artistic Practices) are expected to be active in artistic work and/or research, use the acquired latest knowledge as a basis for their teaching, to provide education on the traditions as well as to follow the advances in their field. The professors are expected to be active members of the Aalto University community as well as the society at large both domestically and internationally. The professors teach many of the courses themselves, but the Department also encourages inviting visiting professionals to share their knowledge on contemporary topics.

Professor (Artistic Practices) in Film Editing for Film and Television will focus primarily on the future artistic challenges in film editing. The main challenge of the position is to provide expertise in film editing practice in its many varieties.  An in-depth view of the aesthetic tradition and the contemporary and future forms of audio-visual arts is essential.

The tasks of the Professor include teaching, artistic activity (and possibly also research) in the field, as well as development and administrative work in the Department. The Professor will co-operate with the faculty of the Department, other departments and other Art Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences. Many of the BA and MA courses in the Department are organised together with the other majors. They will also work tightly with the professional field, build collaborations within Aalto and create and maintain national, Nordic and international collaboration networks. Furthermore, the Professor will actively develop the major, the Department, and the practiced teaching methods in close collaboration with the faculty of the Department.

The selected person is also expected to maintain an active professional career as a film editor while working as a professor. It is possible to take periodic, uncompensated leaves of absence to pursue artistic work. The position will require relocation to Finland for candidates not already located in the country.

Your experience

Professor (Artistic Practices) is considered a professor position with Aalto-level requirements and external evaluation. Significant expertise in artistic and professional work is required for obtaining the position. Experience in teaching is also highly valued. Furthermore, a commitment to developing the field of film editing through artistic and professional work and teaching activities is necessary.

Artistic excellence will be emphasised in the selection process of Professor (Artistic Practices) in Film Editing: the applicant is expected to have significant artistic qualifications and comprehensive practical experience in the field. We expect the candidate to be familiar with all aspects of film editing.

We expect the candidate to know the appropriate traditional, contemporary and emerging film editing methods and technologies. Furthermore, the applicant needs to have an in-depth understanding of the theory, practice and technical demands of the field of film editing and a strong and well-articulated vision regarding the field and how it should be developed and taught.

The applicant will be reviewed based on the following areas: artistic merits, teaching, co-operative skills, and activity and leadership in the artistic or academic community. International experience, as well as research and publication activity, are considered an asset, but are not required.

The position requires fluent command of both written and spoken English. Finnish and Swedish language skills are considered as advantages.
