Postdoctoral Researcher in Metabolic Engineering / Genetics

Research description

Methanogens are attractive microbes for methane (biogas) production, but their substrate spectrum is restricted to simple carbons (e.g. methanol, acetate, CO2, etc.). The goal of the project is to make methanogens capable of using non-native substrates as the sole carbon source. The postdoc position is focused on designing strategies to engineer the primary metabolism of methanogens, for which we already have genetic tools available. The expected outcome is a contribution to fundamental science, but also a potential application for the sustainable utilization of raw materials.

Research is carried out at our excellent facilities at Aalto University, School of Chemical Engineering ( The laboratories are situated on the main campus of Aalto University in Otaniemi (short metro-ride from Helsinki) within the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems ( The first year of research will entail working on an ongoing project. In parallel, the postdoc is expected to develop own projects and apply for continuing funding.
