Postdoctoral Researcher for Horizon 2020 Surefit-project

Horizon 2020 Surefit-project seeks and develops sustainable solutions for affordable retrofit of domestic buildings. This is to reach target of near zero energy through reducing heat losses through building envelope, and energy consumption by heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting, while increasing the share of renewable energy in buildings.

WP2 of the Surefit-project is coordinated by Aalto University and it focuses on sizing of technologies and simulation of the performance of the technologies and buildings. Aalto U will lead the development of dynamic simulation with contribution from all participants. University of Nottingham will be a close university partner in this context.

Job description

Building level computer model development for dynamic simulation of energy demand and supply of domestic buildings. Computer modelling will then be carried out to quantify the energy demand and supply for the buildings to be investigated considering the component models developed in another Task. Also, evolutionary optimization technology will be used to develop a model for determining a combined performance function to meet the energy efficiency and comfort requirements and thus finding the optimum combination of components of a system or combination of systems. Results will be used to aid the determination of technologies for renovation and the design of operating control and the development of a control strategy for optimum operation of the buildings in different seasons and different climates. The model will be applied again at the end for the final evaluation of the building performance after implementation of technologies. In addition, the developed model will be useful for generic residential buildings for energy analysis and renovation.

Specific requirements

We are now seeking for a post-doc researcher for above tasks with good background knowledge in building energy simulation and related tools, energy technologies for buildings, skills in programming (e.g. Matlab) of renewable technologies for buildings, and being able to effectively use building simulation tools such as IESVE, which will be the main tool to be used in the task. The main task will be to accomplish the building energy performance simulations of the houses in the project, and aid in the tasks described above. The suitable candidate is required to have a a Ph.D. degree with suitable experience related to the job description

Duration, salary and benefits

The position is set for a 1-year contract, preferably starting 1 November 2020. A probationary period will apply.The annual workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is currently 1612 hours. Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. The salary for a Postdoctoral researcher is approx. 3600€/month.The contract includes Aalto University occupational healthcare.

The primary workplace will be the Otaniemi Campus at Aalto University.
