Post doctoral researcher in Water governance and policy

Position for Postdoctoral Researcher in Water governance and policy

We seek a highly qualified and motivated individual with an attitude towards collaboration and multi- and interdisciplinary research to work as a Postdoctoral Researcher in our team. The fully-funded position is for a period of 1+2 years and starts in early 2020.

Task description: You will form an integral part of an emerging thematic research area on water governance and policy, led by Associate Professor Marko Keskinen. The research theme aims to carry out rigorous and practically relevant research on the role that governance and policy play in water resources management. Possible research themes include e.g. water-related planning, innovations and policy processes, key management and policy frameworks (e.g. IWRM, water-energy-food security nexus, water security, SDGs), science-policy-stakeholder interface as well as transboundary water cooperation. The key research contexts include Finland, the EU as well as different multilateral settings. The actual focus of your research will be defined together when you start in the position.     

Main responsibilities: You will carry out high-quality, independent research on water governance and policy with links to the other research themes in our research group. You also have a responsibility to develop research practices and collaboration on these themes. We expect you to instruct doctoral researchers and Master’s students on this theme, and be active in fund raising to extend our network and strengthen our team.

Research environment: You will be among the key players of a growing team working on water governance and policy at Aalto. We offer you an inspiring research environment with a multidisciplinary group of enthusiastic researchers at Aalto University’s Water and Environmental Engineering Research Group and related Water & Development Research Group (http://wdrg.aalto.fi). Water and Environmental Engineering Research Group carries out research on three key research themes: water resources management, water and wastewater engineering, and water & development. WDRG is among the world-leading groups on global water issues, focusing on water and its connections with sustainability and development. Our current research themes include e.g. food security, energy security, urbanisation, transboundary waters and water governance, and we study these themes through multiple methods with strong policy relevance and outreach. The group is energetic with a good and supportive working atmosphere.

Contract terms: The starting monthly salary for the position is around 3500 euros and follows the university salary system. The contract includes occupational healthcare as well as university’s support services. The contract is made first for one year, with extension subject to the progress made in the position.

Qualification requirements: You should have completed (or soon complete) a Doctoral Degree from a relevant field, such as governance/policy studies, environmental science, international politics, development studies, sociology, natural resources management or water engineering. You are expected to have a strong drive towards excellence in science and an ability for new, innovative thinking. You must also have strong methodological skills (qualitative and/or quantitative) for studying different governance and policy contexts. While being independent in your own work, we also expect you to be a good team player and open for multi- and interdisciplinary collaboration, in Finland and internationally. Excellent skills in spoken and written English are required, other language skills (incl. Finnish) are an asset.

Assessment criteria: In the assessment process, attention will be particularly given to your research skills (including a solid publication record) as well as to your vision to develop the research theme further. Your interaction and instruction skills as well as willingness to work in multi- and interdisciplinary research settings will also form an important part of the assessment.
