M.Sc. Thesis and/or doctoral student position on intelligent robotic instruments

We are looking for talented M.Sc. student and/or doctoral student to explore novel techniques in the field of intelligent robotic instruments. The research can be built upon the current/previous work of the group, e.g. acoustic manipulation, surface-tension based manipulation, bio-micromanipulation, micro- and nano force measurement and mechanical characterization, or related topics in soft matters and soft robotics. The candidate will work in a highly international, dynamic, and pioneering research group, including multidisciplinary collaboration with researchers/professors in different departments of Aalto University as well as in other universities and internationally.

Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation is a part of Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering. The position on intelligent robotic instruments is opened for Robotic Instruments group (https://www.aalto.fi/department-of-electrical-engineering-and-automation/robotic-instruments) at the department. The position is immediately available. The salary is based on the university salary scheme.

Requirements and details

As a successful applicant, you should be enthusiastic and highly motivated in experimental research and have a background in one or several of the following fields: robotics and automation, mechatronics, applied physics, microsystems, microfluidics, or related fields. Related experience of the research group’s active fields is appreciated. We expect the applicant is eager to work on both robotics and automation software/algorithms as well as hardware implementation of the instruments. The applicant is also expected to be able to analyse the application specific physical phenomena and develop deep understanding. The applicant is expected to be innovative, thinking out-of-box, multi-disciplinary, and hands-on. Experiences in microfabrication and physical modelling will be appreciated.

The position can start as either a M.Sc. thesis work or a doctoral student. For applicant to M.Sc. thesis work, we are looking for students who have succeed well in course study and are research oriented; upon completion of the thesis, the candidate can potentially continue as a doctoral student. For the doctoral student position, the applicant should either have a M.Sc. degree, or expected to have a M.Sc. degree soon. A doctoral student is expected to complete the programme in four years.

The actual topic of the position will be specified based on mutual interests of both the research group and the candidate. The candidate is encouraged to structure the synergies and propose a meaningful topic in the cover letter.
