Doctoral Researcher in the Field of Multidisciplinary Education

The position will be filled as soon as possible, or according to agreement, for a fixed term of one year, with the option to continue for up to 4 years. The researcher may come from outside or inside Aalto university doctoral programs:

Your Role and Goals

Aalto is amongst the World-leading institutions giving multidisciplinary education across its six schools. Your main goal will be to develop a theoretically informed yet practically oriented view about various aspects related to multidisciplinary courses across arts, business and technology education. The method, scope, and focus of the research will be negotiated with you prior to starting the study. You will also participate in teaching, and in reviewing thesis works. The position will be hosted at the School of Engineering.

The proposed work will be an extensive interview, and potentially other forms of, study of both students and teachers at Aalto University covering representatives from different forms of multidisciplinary courses. You are expected to collect data on expected, experienced as well as perceived benefits and disadvantages of multidisciplinarity from both student and teacher perspectives.

Your experience

Successful conduct of the duties requires interest in multidisciplinary education and the development of it. Knowledge of qualitative research methods and simple statistical analysis is an advantage, however, prior research experience is not necessary. Interest and curiosity towards multidisciplinary education is a must, and pedagogical understanding is considered a plus. Good communication skills and academic writing skills in English are required. You are required to have at least a Master’s degree in a relevant field.

Your network and team

You will be working with a multidisciplinary team of education experts, who represent the different Aalto schools. Prof. Katja Hölttä-Otto (Aalto School of Engineering) and Dr. Salu Ylirisku (Aalto School of Electrical Engineering) will have supervisory/advisory role in the study.

  • Degree certificate of the Master’s degree, including a transcript of studies
  • A 2-page proposal on a topic of multidisciplinary project-based courses in higher education.  (2 pages is a suggestion, anything from 1.5-4 is accepted, length is not a bonus)
    • This proposal should cover the state of the art, research questions and methods you would use to answer the research questions or hypotheses. (about 5 references is enough)
    • We are looking for critical thinking skills, ability to find, read and interpret relevant literature, as well as basic language skills
    • You may or may not work in that exact topic area – this is to be discussed if accepted.
