We invite applications for a Ph.D. position in the field of theoretical condensed matter physics, focused on artificial topological superconductivity in van der Waals materials.

The prospective Ph.D. student will work on emergent quantum phenomena in van der Waals materials based combining two-dimensional dichalcogenides, two-dimensional magnetic materials, and graphene. The project aims to exploit controllable magnetism and superconductivity in atomically engineered two-dimensional materials, to create topological superconductors hosting a variety of unconventional excitations, including Majorana bound states.

Topological states of matter provide a powerful playground to explore unconventional physics, realizing excitations not naturally present in nature. In many instances, reaching those states requires the capability of controlling the microscopic properties of materials, a challenging task in conventional bulk compounds. Two-dimensional materials offer a unique opportunity in that direction due to the possibility of controlling details of the Hamiltonian by twist, stack, and proximity effects. Moreover, atomic control provides exciting venues in these systems, opening a path towards controlling internal symmetries of the superconducting state, and ultimately on the nature of the effective electronic interactions.

The Ph.D. student will work on the theoretical fundamentals of van der Waals materials, to propose and model an experimental solid-state realization of emergent quantum states. In particular, the student will focus on how to theoretically exploit anisotropic magnetic interactions, twist engineering and proximity effects to create unconventional electronic states, with a strong emphasis both on the fundamental theory and potential materials science perspective.

This four-year Ph.D. position will be carried out in collaboration between the theory group of “Correlated Quantum Materials” (Prof. Jose Lado) and the experimental group of “Atomic Scale Physics” (Prof. Peter Liljeroth) at Aalto University. Following the standard practice in the Department of Applied Physics, the contract will initially be made for 2 years and it will be extended by another two years after an approved mid-term review. We look for highly motivated individuals with a strong background in theoretical physics and with interest in the experimental realization of exotic quantum states of matter.
