Doctoral candidate in multi-physics analysis and design of smart building elements
The antennas and propagation group at Aalto University invites you to apply for the doctoral candidate position in multi-physics analysis and design of smart building elements. The important challenge in a smart city is to realise both energy efficiency and connectivity for buildings and its residents. Typical energy-efficient buildings prevent wireless base-station signals from reaching the inside of a building. Hence ensuring indoor connectivity by outdoor cellular wireless infrastructure requires significant innovations in both wireless infrastructure and building elements. This challenge is even more important as the fifth-generation (5G) broadband wireless networks comes into play to support especially wireless indoor connectivity.
In this position, you have the opportunity to perform state-of-the-art research on electronics, electromagnetics and radio communications in a group recognized worldwide in 5G research. You will co-design antennas and microwave circuits for smart buildings in collaboration with experts from building engineering and material science, both from academy and industry. The multi-physics design and analysis of building elements with embedded antennas and circuits will be performed using Comsol Multiphysics and CST Studio Suite software packages. You will demonstrate the suitability of the novel building elements by fabricating them for electromagnetic, thermal, mechanical and acoustic insulation tests. You will have access to a wide research infrastructure including antenna and circuit fabrication workshops, microwave instruments and antenna chambers. Our target is that you will acquire the doctoral degree in four years.
You have a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, with a high average grade as well as excellent grades from courses on electronics. Those who gained practical experience in microwave circuit design during his/her master’s degree are most welcome for this position. Background and interests in radio communications systems along with experience in radio frequency instrumentation and measurements are assets. Please document all experience in radio frequency designs and measurements in your application.

The antennas and propagation group of the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering at the School of Electrical Engineering at Aalto University is recognized for its 5G research in Europe. We have performed research in radio instrumentation and measurements, radio propagation modeling, and antenna measurement methods for more than twenty years with outstanding outcomes, strong visibility in notable scientific conferences and journals, and a wide network of collaboration around the world. Salary and contract terms
The expected starting salary for a doctoral candidate is approximately 2450 €/month and salary will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. The contract includes occupational health benefits and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The starting time is flexible but no later than fall 2019.
