Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering invites applications for
Doctoral Candidate in Enhancing Resiliency of Bridge Structures using Intelligent Monitoring Systems
The Department of Civil Engineering is seeking an outstanding Doctoral Candidate for research onenhancing resiliency of bridge structures using intelligent monitoring systems. The doctoral candidate position is available in the bridge research group. Applicants interested in other research topics related to bridge maintenance and rehabilitation, structural healthy monitoring, redundancy and residence evaluation of bridge structures, are also welcome to apply.
Structural damage determination, monitoring and estimating resistance in disaster or accident conditions of bridges is one of the most challenging issues in civil engineering. Failure and deterioration of bridges can cause significant safety and economic costs. With the development of smart sensors, integrating intelligent monitoring systems into bridge structures provide a possibility to enhance their reliability and long-term resiliency.
The candidate will investigate the use of smart sensing systems in different stages (construction stage, service stage, and damaged condition) of bridges structures, and hence, potentially, providing a radical shift in the way these bridges are constructed, inspected and maintained throughout their lifetime. The candidate will perform experimental studies and numerical analyses to investigate the performance of the monitoring system as well as the bridge structures. The research will take into account the bridge behavior in both, actual service conditions as well as realistic damage scenarios. The research will also inspect potential methods of designing smart sensing systems for bridge structures. As already mentioned above, other research topics related to bridge engineering are also welcome.
Required background: The candidate should have a master’s degree in structural engineering, bridge engineering, or structural mechanics, with excellent or very good grades. The ideal candidate also has background in structural healthy monitoring, smart sensors. Knowledge of uncertainly or reliability analyses is considered an advantage.
Expected skills and knowledge: Be able to use at least one structural analysis software and be able to perform structural tests independently are essential requirements. Capability to collaborate in an international research community with English language is also needed.
Contract and salary
The doctoral candidate position is contract-based; one year contract is granted first, followed by a possible extensions ab to four years depending on the achievements during the first contractual period and on an admission to do postgraduate studies in the School of Engineering.
In a maximum of four years, the doctoral candidate is required to 1) complete the doctoral dissertation, 2) finish relevant courses for 40 ECTS credits and 3) participate in teaching and publish journals. The applicant must fulfill the requirements for entitlement to do postgraduate studies at Aalto University: https://into.aalto.fi/display/endoctoraleng/How+to+apply
