Application owner/specialist for Digital Learning
to take care of Aalto University’s Digital Learning system’s technical maintenance and development.
Your role and goals
In this new and versatile position, you are responsible for server administration, application development tasks and implementing new systems and features, which serve the needs of the university’s teachers and students. In this position, you will have a chance to make an impact to the Aalto University experience for students and teachers, and enable world-class education by offering modern learning solutions.
Our current digital learning environment is based on Moodle with PostgreSql database. We have ecosystem of services using multiple integrations and techniques (like Java, Maxima, Jobe, FRENDS). We actively monitor and develop our environment. In the future, we are especially focusing on building an ecosystem of digital learning services including cloud-based solutions.
We offer you an interesting, independent and contributing role in the heart of Aalto’s digitalization. Your work will have direct impact to the Aalto University service development. Although you are independently responsible of your own area of work, we offer you support and coaching when you feel you need it. In addition, you will have plenty of learning and development opportunities and excellent training possibilities.
Your team and network
Our Operations Technology team consists of 12 skilled, talented and experienced professionals. The team is responsible for developing and maintaining Aalto IT solutions on areas such as servers & cloud, data storage, networks, IAM, databases, BI, etc. Your team leader will be Hannu-Pekka Poikonen whose leadership style is respect, listen and enable. We work in Aalto IT Services because together we can co-create and enable cool things – and have fun while doing it!
You work in close cooperation with e.g., Digital Learning Solution Owner, system owners/administrators, project managers and technical specialists.
Your experience and ambitions
Do you have the drive to help develop Aalto University’s Digital Learning further in co-operation with the Solution Owner? Do you already have strong experience related to server platforms? Do you also enjoy following your field and the latest trends? In that case, this position might be the right one for you.
To shine in this position, we expect you to be experienced in:
- Linux administration (Red Hat Enterprise Linux experience is appreciated)
- Server side application development in PHP
- Using APIs (web APIs): you have developed applications that transfer data via standard APIs such as REST architecture.
- Database administration (especially PostgreSql)
- Using version control systems (such as git)
We also value your knowledge and experience in:
- Moodle system administration and configuration
- Working in software development projects
- Python programming and ability to learn other programming languages
- Systems integration
- Jupyter Notebook / JupyterHub
- Container platforms (such as Docker with Kubernetes)
- Cloud platforms (Especialy MS Azure)
- Knowledge of modern techniques like xAPI, LTI.
As your personal qualities:
You have good social and cooperation skills and you are able to communicate and collaborate both with technical and business-minded co-workers and partners. In order to succeed in our environment, you need to accommodate the various needs of different stakeholders, prioritize them and communicate your views in diplomatic, yet confident manner. As your position is responsible and independent, we wish that it is natural to you to actively search knowledge yourself, but also ask questions when needed.
Aalto University is highly international working environment, so we expect you to have good English language skills. Finnish language skills are an advantage.
