Objectives of studies

The development of society must be sustainable and reasonable from the perspectives of both the environment and the economy. The ultimate purpose of business activities is to provide the society with added value and positive impacts. This is exactly what the Bachelor’s Programme in Business prepares you for. After completing the degree, you have:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of business economics. Basic courses provide you with thorough familiarity with each area of specialisation at the level of both theory and practice.
  • Solid substantial knowledge in the major subject of your choice. You will familiarise yourself more thoroughly with one area of specialisation and reach the level of skills required in the professional life and Master’s degree studies.
  • A critical and analytical way of thinking. You are familiar with key business indicators, and you are able to make tactical and strategic decisions based on them.
  • Theoretical expertise. You understand extensive and complex entities, such as the theories behind business operations as well as the principles that affect all activities both in the private and the public sectors.
  • Excellent cooperation skills. You are able to solve problems reactively and take action through concrete means, both as a manager and a member of a multicultural team.
  • Convincing presentation skills. You are able to implement your ideas with an entrepreneurial attitude and communicate them both in writing and orally to all relevant interest groups.
  • The ability to contribute to the creation of a better society by developing business operations. You are familiar with the concepts of responsible business and ethics, you comply with them and strive for results that are as beneficial as possible from the perspectives of both business and the society.

After graduating from the Bachelor’s Programme in Business, you are comprehensively familiar with the basic principles of business, and, thanks to your major studies, you have achieved sufficient expertise in one field of business to start pursuing a career in it and to continue to Master’s degree studies.

Study language

The language of teaching is Finnish.

Structure of studies

The basic degree structure of the School of Business has two stages. This means that a student admitted to the Bachelor’s degree programme must complete the Bachelor of Science (Economics and Business Administration) degree before advancing to Master’s degree studies. The Bachelor’s Programme in Business is organised by the Aalto University School of Business, and it comprises a comprehensive entity of 180 ECTS credits completed in an estimated period of three years:

  • Fundamentals of Business Knowledge (60 ETCS)
  • Intermediate studies in the field of specialisation (60 ETCS)
  • Minor studies module (24–30 ECTS)
  • Language and communication studies (18 ETCS)
  • Elective studies (18–30 ECTS)

The majority of graduated bachelors continue directly to the Master of Science (Economics and Business Administration) degree which comprises 120 ECTS credits of studies completed in an estimated period of two years:

  • Advanced degree studies (84 ETCS)
  • Minor studies module (24 ECTS)
  • Elective studies (12 ECTS)

For optional and minor subject studies, you can select studies that interest you in other areas of specialisation in the School of Business or, alternatively, in the fields of technology and art. It is also possible to complete an international exchange period as a minor subject. This is the most popular option among the students of the School of Business.

Content of studies

Studies at the School of Business are a combination of theoretically-focused lectures and exercises that apply theories into group work and case studies carried out collaboratively with companies. Part of the studies are carried out online, but the first year, in particular, is mostly based on contact teaching. In order to successfully complete the free-form studies whose content is flexible, students have to assume an active, independent approach to studying and engage in self-initiated teamwork with course mates.

During the first year, students complete the common Fundamentals of Business Knowledge module (60 ETCS) which is provided in Finnish. The module introduces students with the basics of business sciences and lays the foundation for subsequent studies. At the end of the first year, students select an area of specialisation on which they want their studies to focus.

In the second year, the studies continue through specialisation area studies, some of which are provided in Finnish and some in English. Seven specialisation areas are available for the Bachelor’s degree.

During the second year of study, the selection of a minor module becomes relevant. Students may flexibly complete minor subjects offered by any of Aalto University’s schools. In addition, students may select an international exchange period as a minor subject, and more than half of our students do so.

In the third year, students finish their specialisation studies which include the bachelor’s thesis (10 ETCS). It is a scientific study in the student’s specialisation area, and its aim is to develop the student’s capacity to carry out scientific research. The thesis prepares the student for Master’s degree studies. The Master’s degree programmes offered by the School of Business are:

Campus & student life

Aalto University is located in Otaniemi, a 10-minute metro ride from central Helsinki. The modern campus offers a cosy study environment close to nature for over 12,000 students. Students get to know each other through studies and vibrant student activities. Aalto University has hundreds of student clubs and associations that organise events related to culture, sports and other hobbies. The everyday life at the university is full of interesting interaction between students, teachers, staff and partner companies.

The Bachelor’s Programme in Business welcomes you to an inspiring and warm studying community. Our student association, Aalto University Business Students (KY), provides opportunities to engage in numerous hobbies, experiences and lifelong friendships as a counterbalance to studies. In addition, each area of specialisation has its own student organisation which enables students of the same major to get to know each other outside of the course activities.

International opportunities

As a student of Aalto University, you have excellent opportunities to engage in international activities during your studies, and international mobility is a natural part of Aalto students’ lives. As a student, it is easy to go on an exchange. You will receive guidance and advice in selecting the exchange university, and the exchange will be supported by grants. Student exchanges are closely integrated into the degree programmes to lower the threshold for participating in an exchange as much as possible. Every year, approximately 300 students from the School of Business go on an exchange to approximately 130 partner universities around the world.

You can also apply for the CEMS Master’s in International Management (CEMS MIM) degree, which includes a module in a foreign CEMS (The Global Alliance in Management Education) partner university. In addition to the Aalto University School of Business, the CEMS network includes 29 of the world’s leading business schools.

The School of Business also has double degree agreements with several foreign universities. The double degree programme is completed during two academic years so that the student studies for one year at the School of Business and for one year at the partner university. The graduate receives two degrees: A Master’s degree from their Master’s degree programme at the Aalto University School of Business and a Master’s degree from the programme completed at the partner university.

You also have the opportunity to independently acquire a study place at a foreign university and study there for an academic year. Such studies can be accredited as part of the degree you complete at the School of Business. You may also apply for a grant for these so-called free mover studies.

Aalto University welcomes thousands of international degree and exchange students every year. They join Aalto’s diverse community through both studies and numerous free time events, activities and festivities. Our active tutor activities help foreign students adapt to the Nordic culture and the daily life in Otaniemi – and of course, they offer an excellent way of getting to know exchange students.

Multidisciplinary opportunities

Aalto University is a recognised pioneer of multidisciplinary studies that combine the fields of science, business, technology and art. The vibrant campus and elective courses effectively combine students from different fields. The often spontaneous multidisciplinarity has a strong tendency to foster the emergence of new ideas and connect people who are enthusiastic about them, creating friendships, useful networks and, ultimately, even new companies.

The Bachelor’s Programme in Business supports multidisciplinary opportunities particularly through flexibility. You can choose your minor subject and several optional individual courses in the fields of technology and art. In addition, the activities organised by KY and the Aalto University Student Union (AYY) are of interdisciplinary and field-combining nature.

Career opportunities

The world is filled with valuable ideas that contribute to the development of society. However, in many cases, the ideas’ problems lie in their economic non-profitability. Experts of economics play a crucial role in finding solutions to these problems. This is an excellent example of business activities’ ability to positively impact the society and their amazingly extensive possibilities for multidisciplinary and international applications.

A degree from the Aalto University School of Business offers you numerous opportunities to build a career in economy, business or the public sector or as an entrepreneur or a researcher. The orientation of your career depends primarily on your interests, but the area of specialisation you select for your degree also affects it to some extent. The transition to the world of work often starts already during the studies as the demand for experts of economics is strong both in Finland and abroad. The employment rate of graduates is very high, and they are employed in expert and management positions that correspond to their education. In addition, they have excellent skills for entrepreneurship.

Most of Bachelor’s Programme in Business students continue to the Master’s degree programme of their major subject, and some continue even further to the doctoral programme and pursue an academic career. Of course, immediate transition to the world of work following the completion of the Bachelor’s degree or changing the major subject for the Master’s degree studies are also viable options.
