Steering groups guide decision-making process

Five steering groups are in operation at Aalto University.

The task of the steering groups is to prepare policies, recommendations, and comments for use in decision-making on university-level operations. The new two-year term began for the steering groups in the beginning of 2017, and the Schools have appointed new members to the groups.

The steering groups are an important link between the University and the Schools, and group members bring the Schools’ views on important operational matters. In every steering group there is also a student representative. The matters considered by the steering groups are then submitted for decision-making to either the University Academic Affairs Committee (AAC) or the President's Management Team (PMT).

The Research and Innovation Steering Group (RISG)
deals with operational research and innovation matters which require university-wide comment, policies or recommendations. RISG boosts cooperation and sharing of best practices between the schools. 

RISG meets every month and reports to the PMT.The group is chaired by Vice Presidents Ossi Naukkarinen and Janne Laine and coordinated by Head of Research Services Ella Bingham.

The Artistic Activities Steering Group (AASG)
deals with the development of Aalto University’s artistic and creative activities. The steering group has four working groups, which are focused on the following areas: 1) transdisciplinary projects, exhibitions and events, 2) university-wide art studies (UWAS), 3) brand visuality and 4) art in the international university sphere.

AASG meets every month and reports to the PMT. The group is chaired by Vice President Anna Valtonen and the coordinated by Senior Specialist Teija Löytönen.

The Learning Steering Group (LeSG)
prepares and steers strategic tasks and development projects relating to teaching, learning, and education in general. LeSG coordinates quality management in teaching and learning, and serves as a platform for developing activities and processes and sharing good practices. With the help of task groups, LeSG takes into account the Schools’ different viewpoints and operating practices.

LeSG meets every month and reports to the PMT. The group is chaired by Vice President Petri Suomala and coordinated by Head of Learning Services Eija Zitting.

The Campus Development Steering Group (CDSG)
focuses on projects and questions related to the development of university buildings, spaces and facilities. This includes matters such as facilities’ purpose of use, mixing of activities, workplace development, interior design, building projects, urban planning, landscape architecture, environmental planning and land-use planning. The steering group coordinates the University's strategic initiatives in the field of campus development.

CDSG meets every month and reports to the PMT.The group is chaired by CFO Marianna Bom and coordinated by Noora Stapleton .

Digital Aalto Steering Group (DASG)
guides enterprise architecture and the advancement of digital transformation at Aalto. The steering group sees to the prioritising of cross-organisational IT matters and approves large IT investment decisions.

DASG meets six times a year and reports to the PMT. The group is chaired by CDO Kati Hagros and coordinated by Manager Sari Vehtari

Services Steering Group (SESG)
prepares, coordinates and follows up joint strategic and operative issues of the joint service- related affairs. Prepares and discuss matters related to service portfolio.

SESG meets 8-10 times a year and reports to the PMT. The group is chaired by Provost Kristiina Mäkelä and coordinated by Senoir specialist Jarkko Niittumaa.
