Research Ethics for Doctoral Students 2022-2023 (course)

This is a course designed for doctoral students and recommended for first or second year of study. This 2 ECTS course will help you to recognise and analyse key research ethical questions, formulate an ethical research plan and identify rights and responsibilities as a researcher, among other things. The course is arranged twice a year.

Course participation 

Course is designed for doctoral students and recommended for first or second year of study. This 2 ECTS course comprises of 46 hours of independent study and 8 hours of workshops with compulsory attendance, taught by PhD Henriikka Mustajoki, and 2 hours of School specific content taught by PhD Annukka Jyrämä.

All course correspondence will be sent to the participants’ Aalto email, so please check your email at the start of the course for more details on assessment tasks and course content.

NB. CHEM doctoral students: This course is part of CHEM’s course Toolkit for Doctoral students. It’s not possible to participate separately in this course if you have completed / are planning to complete Toolkit-course. If you are taking part in toolkit course 2022-2023, you don’t need to enroll to this course. Please note that these lectures are included in the CHEM’s course Toolkit for Doctoral Students; hence, as CHEM student, do NOT enroll separately to this Research Ethics course. These session focus on the research integrity, the research ethics review process at Aalto University and what research ethics aspects to take into account when planning your doctoral thesis work and data collection.

Participate in your own School's session. If it doesn't fit your schedule, you may join some other School's session, but please note that the content is tailored for each School.

Learning outcomes 

At the completion of this course a doctoral student is able to

  1. recognise and analyse key research ethical questions
  2. formulate ethical research plans and responses to ethical challenges by applying key ethical theories and approaches
  3. recognise and understand key ethical principles guiding research and how they apply to research work
  4. understand the Finnish Responsible Conduct of Research guidelines, processes for dealing with research misconduct, and processes for applying research license or ethical review
  5. identify rights and responsibilities as a researcher
  6. understand how ethical decisions and choices influence society and research community

Evaluation criteria

The course is assessed as Pass / Fail. The course completion requires: 

  • active engagement with the course material;
  • completing compulsory assessment tasks detailed above.

The course evaluation is based on adequately achieving learning outcomes as evidenced in the assessment tasks.
