Abstract: My story with usability of health information systems began in 2008, when I conducted my very first study observing hospital physicians’ clinical work with electronic health record systems. Thereafter in 2010, I found myself in a multidisciplinary team that developed a national usability-focused survey for physicians. Since then, the survey has been conducted four times among physicians in Finland, spread to other countries, and also adjusted for nurses and social care professionals. Moreover, the questionnaire was validated as a survey instrument. Currently these surveys are used for the monitoring of the development of health and social care information systems from the end-users’ perspectives. The coverage and time span of the surveys are unique even internationally - as is our most recent study about comparing user experiences of three professional groups: physicians, nurses and social welfare professionals.

Alongside health and social care professionals, the patient’s perspective on digitalization is equally important. Our research projects “Renewing Children’s Hospital for Families” and “eHealth in Home Dialysis” have fostered research into patient experience, which is an emerging concept attracting researchers in several disciplines.

Finland is one of the leading countries in health and social care digitalization. My vision is to establish a research field of human-centred health informatics at Aalto University and broaden it to cover social care informatics as well.

Bio: Johanna Viitanen (D.Sc.Tech.) is working as a Professor of Practice at the Department of Computer Science at Aalto University. Her area of research is human-centred health informatics. Viitanen has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles in the fields of health informatics and human-computer interaction (HCI). Her current research interests include patient experience, human-centred design of eHealth solutions, user experiences of health and social care information systems, and usability in the procurement of complex domain IT systems (such as health and social care information systems). Viitanen has teaching experience for over 15 years at the university. In addition, she is an adjunct assistant professor in the School of Health Information Science at the University of Victoria, Canada.
