EMILIJA VESELOVA is a doctoral candidate at NODUS Sustainable Design Research Group. In this talk, Emilija will present her research on how natural nonhumans, such as animals, insects, soil, different ecosystems, can be included and considered as important stakeholders in design, planning and decision making processes.

ELISA VAINIO is working as a Project Manager at the Baltic Sea Action Group focusing on regenerative agriculture and international soil collaboration. In her presentation, she will present the Carbon Action platform which develops and researches ways of accelerating soil carbon sequestration and verifying the results scientifically.

ASLIHAN OGUZ is a designer, food entrepreneur, blogger, podcaster and independent researcher focusing on sustainable food systems, feminist food studies and feminist systems thinking. She will introduce what food sovereignty means, how and why this movement started, its current position and how it connects to a new food system narrative, which is part of the research she is currently building.

RUBY VAN DER WEKKEN is a producing member of Oma maa cooperative and considers herself a member of the Global Justice movement. In her presentation she will talk about Oma maa's peoples process around agriculture and how this for Oma maa relates to change - in thought and in practice.

CINDY KOHTALA is Postdoctoral Researcher in Aalto University, Department of Design. She studies fab labs and maker culture and how sustainability is represented in their new prosumption practices and sociotechnical utopias. Her presentation will introduce open design: what it is, who does it, who researches it, and how it connects to sustainability.



DAVID CUARTIELLES RUIZ is a teacher and researcher of interaction design at Malmö University, Sweden, exploring the co-creation of socio-technical platforms.



CÉSAR GARCÍA SÁEZ is an independent researcher specialised in maker culture and digital fabrication, and publisher/producer of the La Hora Maker podcast.



David and César will talk about the Coronavirusmakers open design platform they helped initiate and maintain, for the collaborative production and distribution of PPE in Spain starting in March 2020.

NODUS TALKS Accommodating Urban Food Futures

KATA FODOR is an architect and doctoral researcher at Aalto University, focusing on the spatial preconditions/implications of sustainable urban food systems. She will discuss the changing spatial logics embedded in 21st century food systems, as well as how new hybrid food spaces may facilitate more sustainable urban food practices.

LOUIS POHL is a social architect and founder of the Foodhall Project and the National Food Service UK. The National Food Service is a new public service aiming to eliminate food insecurity and tackle the interconnected issues of social isolation and food waste by creating new experimental food typologies. His talk will explore how prototypes have responded during Covid-19 and how new public spaces can serve as a platform to create new civic relationships after Covid-19.

ZEYNEP FALAY von FLITTNER is the design director and partner in leading service design and customer experience consultancy, Hellon. In her talk, she will talk about the impact of sustainability on design consultancies and reflect on the challenges of designers who are trying to do “good" within business limitations.

MILOŠ MLADENOVIĆ is a human and engineer, trying to understand and share knowledge about urban mobility systems. His talk titled "The Anarchist Cookbook and Imaginaries of Self-Driving Vehicle Technology" will explore contrasting official imaginaries of self-driving vehicle technology with the multitude of anticipated civil disobedience cases to unpack fundamental moral challenges that could further depoliticize technological (non)-development.



ARTO SIVONEN is the founder of Måndag, a marketing designer and an urban activist. In his talk titled, "Activism, what does that really mean?" Sivonen will be discussing activism, its meaning, and how to activate social change.

MERI LÖYTTYNIEMI is a solution-oriented change agent leading Aalto University's Sustainability team. She will be presenting about implementing sustainability within higher education and how to promote topics like degrowth in an organization like Aalto University.

EEVA HOUTBECKERS is a postdoctoral researcher who studies postgrowth work and livelihoods in the global North and an activist in the degrowth movement. Her presentation focuses on experiences of promoting degrowth in various instances since 2016.

DR. MICHAEL LETTENMEIER is a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Design at Aalto University. He is interested in the implications of one-planet lifestyles for households, business and society, and for the transition to an eco-welfare state. He will speak about what 1.5-degree lifestyles will look like and how the transition towards them could be accelerated.

HANNA-REETTA LUUKKAINEN is the Head of Customer Data and Loyalty Services at Kesko. Her presentation is titled The Butterfly Effect – Using Customer Data as a Tool to Address Climate Change.

MERJA RYÖPPY is an actor and a PhD research fellow at the University of Southern Denmark and a visiting researcher at Aalto University. She employs participatory theatre methods in design processes to understand the ongoing social and material relations among people, products and objects.

AMOS TAYLOR is a futurist and researcher at Finland Futures Research Centre, University of Turku. His research considers the coming transformations for the next 100 years and the ethical decisions that arise for society and the planet. His work explores highly participatory and creative approaches to engage alternative futures.

SEONA CANDY is a researcher in sustainable food and urban systems at the Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies (Urbaria) at the University of Helsinki. She will talk about how addressing food waste could be a catalyst for broader food systems sustainability if undertaken with a deep transformation approach.

CARLOS HENRIQUES studied hospitality management and quickly discovered his passion for cooking. He is one of the co-founders of Restaurant Nolla, Helsinki’s first zero-waste restaurant. He will be sharing his perspective on sustainable practices and how to start.

ANGELA MORIGGI is External Researcher at Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and a Kone Foundation grantee. She will talk about the link between care ethics and sustainability transformations, and explain how care principles inspired her participatory action research approach, working with nature-based entrepreneurs in Finland.

PAULIINA SEPPÄLÄ is a social scientist and an entrepreneur, who has been involved in launching and developing several events and platforms that facilitate participatory society, from a crowdfunding platform to a neighborhood platform. She has co-founded the NGO Yhteismaa and the company Mesenaatti.me. She will speak about organic co-creation and neighborhoods of care. The event is free but please register as seats are limited.

DR. SAMPSA HYYSALO is professor of co-design at Aalto University, Department of Design. Sampsa’s
research and teaching interests are in co-design and user involvement in sustainable sociotechnical change. He will present a mid-range pathway creation toolset which helps diverse participants to codesign changes toward
transition goals in areas such as energy, biodiversity and aquatic resource use.

JUHA KRONQVIST is a lead service designer at Hellon, a design agency challenging traditional management consulting with a human-centered focus on business and leadership. He will present the Nordic Urban Mobility game, a tool for discovering future paths and planning cross-industry collaboration. The game was developed in collaboration with Nordic Innovation.

DR. SANNA LEHTINEN is Research Fellow at the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science HELSUS (University of Helsinki) and the President of the Finnish Society for Aesthetics. She will talk about the concept of aesthetic sustainability and how it can increase our understanding of experiential quality and sustainable futures.

NEMO architects, Maria and Jussi Laine, is a young Helsinki-based architectural practice working on sustainable architecture and design in the present market. NEMO will present their concepts for creating public awareness of sustainable aesthetics.

TERRY IRWIN is a professor and former Head of the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University. In May she stepped down to launch a new “CMU Institute for Transition Design” that will focus on research, teaching and collaboration with colleagues in other universities working in the area of designing for transition.

İDİL GAZİULUSOY is Assistant Professor of Sustainable Design at the Aalto School of Art, Design and Architecture and leader of NODUS Sustainable Design Research Group. Idil is an expert in design for sustainability transitions particularly focusing on business transformation and urban transitions to address climate change.

SAMPSA HYYSALO is professor of co-design at the Aalto School of Art, Design and Architecture. Sampsa’s research interests are in codesign and user involvement in innovation and sociotechnical change.

ELİF ÖZTEKİN is doing her doctoral studies in NODUS Sustainable Design Research Group at Aalto University Department of Design. She inquires into community-led eco-settlements and their learning networks.

MARCO STEINBERG is an architect and the founder of Snowcone and Haystack, a Helsinki based strategic design practice. In his talk, he will take a critical stance on the idea of pilots, calling for more transformative strategies in our models of governance.

RAMIA MAZÉ is Professor of New Frontiers in Design at Aalto, leading its Design for Government course. She will talk about design roles and design issues within government, particularly given the contemporary expansion of the ‘instruments’ of governance including pilots.

JUHA KRONQVIST is lead service designer at Hellon and has worked on multiple public sector projects with clients such as the City of Helsinki. In his talk he will share some reflections on the role of design in creating better public services.

EEVA BERGLUND is Adjunct professor in the Department of Design at Aalto University. Having a background in social anthropology, she teaches and writes on issues to do with society and the environment, whilst participating in and trying to better understand urban activism.

PAULIINA JALONEN is an urban activist who has recently turned to training and peer-learning in connection with activism for social change. She has been a Helsinki organiser of the Jane’s Walk festival and is currently co-organising Espoo Mini Maker Faire in Iso Omena.

MICHAEL LETTENMEIER is finalizing his PhD thesis at Aalto University, focusing on sustainable lifestyles and how to make them happen. He has developed the 8 tonnes material footprint benchmark for one-planet lifestyles and its applications in household consumption and design.

OULA ANTERE is an Aalto University alumnus and the CEO of ResQ Club, an app where urban people can purchase surplus food from restaurants. He strives to create ways of consuming that are not only sustainable but better and easier than anything else on he market.

KIRSI NIINIMÄKI is an Associate Professor in Fashion research at Aalto University. Her research focuses on holistic understanding of sustainable fashion and textile fields and connections between design, manufacturing, business models and consumption.

ANNIINA NURMI is a sustainable fashion specialist, sharing her knowledge about sustainable fashion through writing, teaching and consulting. She is also developing a "clothing as a service system" which brings new sharing economy business models to the fashion industry.

CINDY KOHTALA is a Postdoctoral researcher in Aalto University, who has examined how digital fabrication communities in FabLabs and makerspaces address environmental issues. Open Design relates to both designing things as well as communities: self-organizing groups who decide what to design and how to do it.

JASON SELVARAJAN has studied Environmental Engineering. His water recycling and energy recovering shower filtration system called Showerloop examplifies open hardware that can be adapted almost anywhere. Its various prototypes have been displayed in events such as OSCE Days Helsinki or POC21 near Paris, France.

NODUS TALKS Caring for the Immaterial

MIKKO JALAS is Professor of Practice at Aalto University and head of the Creative Sustainability program. Next to a focus on renewable energy technologies, his research interest lies in the different experiences of time and its meaning for sustainability. In his talk Mikko will focus on the time-intense, dedicated care for wooden boats.

HEIKKI HÄYHÄ is a lecturer in conservation at the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. Engaging with wooden boats first through a self-built Optimist-dinghy, which never turned to be water tight, he currently serves at boards such as the committee for classic boats at the Helsingfors Segel Sällskap.

PEKKA MURTO is a doctoral candidate in Aalto University Department of Design who has studied design management and sustainable design in complex and networked product development. In this talk, he shows how seemingly ’wrong’ design processes in a shipbuilding project led to the right outcomes from the perspective of good design.

JUTTA NUORTILA-JOKINEN is an Associate Professor in LUT, is a sustainability expert advocating eco-design of products, processes and services. Having worked for UPM and as an independent consultant, she will consider the challenges and rewards of implementing sustainable business ideas.

NODUS TALKS Energy citizens open knowledge

SAMPSA HYYSALO is Associate Professor in Co-Design at Aalto University with a research focus on longitudinal studies of designer-user relations in technology projects. His talk examines the Internet based peer-to-peer discussion forums on heat pumps and how they have helped the diffusion of this technology.

LILLI LINKOLA is a sustainability expert advocating circular economy, renewable energies and open knowledge. Having worked on projects for Sitra, the Green Building Council and the City of Helsinki, she will consider the role of open data in the energy transition in her talk.
