Shanghai Design & Innovation Cooperation with Tongji
In addition to cooperation in teaching and research, collaboration between the two universities covers work aimed at developing new models for promoting greater cooperation between the university and business worlds.
The two universities have an extensive programme of staff and student exchanges – covering areas such as teaching, joint master’s degree projects, and the sustainable development of the universities’ campuses.
Aalto is Tongji University's international founding partner in the Shanghai International College of Design and Innovation ( Shanghai D&I) which began its operations in the Tongji University campus in Shanghai in autumn 2017. Aalto University's role in the joint project is to provide around one-third of the D&I's teaching content for students from Tongji. The students can choose to study in anyone of the three Masters degree programmes in Aalto namely, International Design Business Management, Creative Sustainability and Collaborative and Industrial Design.
The Sino-Finnish Centre was set up on the campus of Tongji University in autumn 2010 and offers an innovative set of models for students, teachers, and researchers to cooperate with companies and other partners. The Centre also acts as a valuable node for promoting dialogue and interaction between Finland and China more generally and supporting Finnish companies in China.
The Aalto-Tongji Design Factory (ATDF) is based at the Sino-Finnish Centre and provides a design-based platform for students, researchers, companies, and society to interact with each other. ATDF is also being used to test the potential and viability of the Design Factory concept, which has got off to a good start in Finland, in a Chinese environment. ATDF hosts a number of multidisciplinary and international courses, events, projects, and initiatives.
