Welcome to learn how can circular economy and co-design come together to be promoters of real positive change! The course content has been designed in collaboration with academics from world’s leading design and technology universities. This is a unique chance to learn and develop your ideas in an international, multidisciplinary context and experience hands-on work in high-quality laboratories at Aalto University campus.

The course will construct a systemic understanding of the change needed while transforming the current linear economy towards circular economy. A circular economy is a powerful way to address climate change, resource scarcity and biodiversity loss while also meeting critical social needs. The focus of the course will be on how to prevent waste and pollution, how to keep products and materials in use longer and how to regenerate the whole system towards a better balance.

The teaching of the course consists of three core themes, which are materials and products in the circular economy, the system level and the role of the circular economy in future scenarios. The course is expected to increase students' understanding of the importance of the transition to a circular economy and the crucial role of design and consumers in this change. Students will learn modular thinking, prefabrication and design for deconstruction as tools or strategies for designing  sustainable products. At the course students will also build scenarios towards the desired future.

In between intensive study weeks, two days (6.-7.8.) are spent in a beautiful Nuuksio National Park. Naturally, we also want to offer the possibility to sauna. Feel free to plan your own activities or just enjoy the nature and Finnish summer eve by swimming in the lake, sitting by a bonfire or just walking in the forest together with other summer school partners. We will take care of all the practicalities such as accommodation and meals.

First Summer School at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture will be held in August 2022
