Exam instructions at the Open University
Exam organizers, registrations, dates and places, and exam practices at the Open University
Registration for Open University exams takes place in the Aimo-service (exception: degree students on summer courses register in Sisu, if they have also done course registration in Sisu). Please register for exams with the same username that you have used when registering for the course (usually it is your Aimo ID, not your Aalto ID). For Open University students it is recommended to always use Aimo with Aimo username and password.

You have the right to take part in all the exams which are mentioned in the course description (usually 2-3 exams/course). The payment of a book exam covers only one exam. Exam dates are available in the course description or on MyCourses. Exam results can be found in Sisu, and sometimes also on MyCourses.
Exams are offered either by the Open University (Open University evening courses) or by Aalto University Schools/Language Centre (degree courses).
Registration for exams takes place in the Aimo-service (exception: degree students on summer courses register in Sisu, if they have done course registration in Sisu). Please register for exams with the same username that you have used when registering for the course (usually it is your Aimo ID, not your Aalto ID). In order to register, choose Own transactions -->Course registration. Next, choose Exam registration (exams during nn.nn.-nn.nn.20nn). Before you click Send form, please check that you have chosen the right exam.

Open University exams (evening courses)
When you register for a course you will be automatically registered for the course examination and the interim examinations of the course. The first examination (i.e. the course examination, abbreviated KT) is held at the end of the course. Therefore you do not need to register for the first sitting of the examination if you have registered for the course.
Students must register separately for all other examinations (re-examinations and book examinations, for example). Registration ends 7 days before the examination date. Only students who have registered as instructed for the examination have a right to be graded and receive the credits.
Exams in the field of Business
When you register for a course arranged by the School of Business you will be automatically registered for the course examination (first examination, abbreviated KT) which is held at the end of the course. Therefore you do not need to register for the first sitting of the examination if you have registered for the course.
Students must register separately for all other examinations arranged by the School of Business (re-examinations and book examinations, for example). Such registration begins two months before and ends 7 days before the examination date. Only students who have registered as instructed for the examination have a right to be graded and receive the credits.
Exams in the field of Technology
When you register for a course you will be automatically registered for the course examination and the interim examinations of the course. The course examination (abbreviated KT) is the first examination after the course. Therefore you do not need to register for the first sitting of the examination if you have registered for the course.

Such registration begins two months before and ends 7 days before the examination date. You'll find this section only in Finnish.
Language course exams
Final examinations are usually organized during the last lecture of the course or as specified by the teacher. Some courses have both oral and written examinations. Further information on examinations will be given by the teacher of the course.
For certain exams, you may need to register in the Aimo service.

The exams can be 2 hrs, 3 hrs or 4 hrs depending on the course and are held between 16-20. You can enter the exam hall 30 minutes after the official commencement of the exam at the latest. You can leave the exam earliest 35 minutes after the official commencement of the exam.
Exams offered by the Open University are intended only for those who have registered for the course arranged by the Open University.

Open University exams are arranged in the Undergraduate Centre Building in Otaniemi (Kandidaattikeskus), street address: Otakaari 1, Espoo.
You can enter the exam hall 30 minutes after the official commencement of the exam at the latest. You can leave the exam earliest 35 minutes after the official commencement of the exam.

Exam practices
- Register for the exam on time, one week before the exam at the latest. For the course exam (first exam of the course), you do not need to register.
- Exams start on the hour – not quarter past – arrive on time.
- Find out the location of the exam hall in time.
- Check the list of registered students outside the exam hall for your name (NOTE! This concerns exams organized by the Schools). If you don't find your name on the list you can't take the exam.
- Turn off your mobile phone.
- Leave your bag and coat to the side of the exam hall.
- You may only take your pen, eraser and ID (and water bottle if needed) with you to your seat. If calculators are needed, exam supervisors will give them.
- If you have any questions (e.g. you want more paper), raise your hand and the supervisor will come to you.
- Please concentrate on your own examination paper to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings. The supervisors have the right to remove you from the examination if cheating is suspected. (If you are found cheating, a disciplinary process may be started.)
- You can enter the exam hall 30 minutes after the official commencement of the exam at the latest. You can leave the exam earliest 35 minutes after the official commencement of the exam.
- Return all the exam papers, including scratch paper, if not mentioned otherwise, and show your ID when returning the papers.
- If you don’t want to have your examination graded, please write clearly on the paper: “Please do not grade my paper”. Course grades will not be removed from the register for any reason. A pass grade will be shown on the transcript. A fail grade will be registered but will not be shown on the transcript. The examination can be retaken, and the best grade obtained will remain on the transcript.

If you are in need of individual exam arrangements for disability or health reasons, please contact the Open University office [email protected] preferably at the beginning of the course.
Students in need of individual study arrangements for disability or health reasons must contact Open University at [email protected] at the beginning of the course or at the latest 2 weeks before the exam.
Individual study arrangements at examinations may include for example additional time, a separate examination space or an assistive tool. Individual arrangements must be agreed in beforehand.

Individual study arrangements at Open University
Teachers have four weeks time to evaluate the examination or assignment as of the examination date or deadline of the assignment. You can check the examination results in Sisu (login with your Aalto user ID).
Courses evaluated principally on the basis of the coursework have one final examination and one make-up examination. Courses evaluated principally on the basis of the final examination have a final examination and two make-up examinations. If you fail to complete the course on all of the examination dates, you must retake the course.
If you are unhappy with your exam results, you should contact the course teacher immediately after being informed of the grade. If you do not have the contact details of the teacher, you can get them at the Open University office. The teacher is obligated to explain the evaluation criteria used and their application in your case.
If you remain unsatisfied with the grading, you can appeal against it either orally or in writing to the teacher in charge of the grading. The appeal against a grade of a study attainment shall be filed within 14 days of the date on which the student has been offered the opportunity to see the results and the evaluation criteria applied to their study attainment.
Students dissatisfied with the decision of the teacher may appeal against the decision in writing to the Aalto University Academic Appeals Board within 14 days of receiving notification of the decision.
