Aalto TMS facilities


Neuronavigated TMS Systems

Aalto TMS lab's TMS systems includes Visor2 neuronavigation system and two stimulation units: Magstim Bistim² and Super Rapid² Plus¹. Bistim² and Super Rabid² Plus¹ are magnetic nerve stimulators intended for the stimulation of cortical and peripheral nerves for diagnostic and research purposes.

Magstim Bistim²

Bistim² consists of two Magstim 200² units and a Magstim Bistim² Connecting Module. Two units make it possible to output units into two seprate coils or output two units into single coil either as single high energy pulse or as a pair of individual pulses.

Technical Specifications (stimulator output):

Stimulation frequency 0.25 Hz in Bistim mode.
0.50 Hz at 1-49% power output in simultaneous discharge mode.
0.33 Hz at 50-75% power output in simultaneous discharge mode.
0.25 Hz at 76-100% power output in simultaneous discharge mode.
Pulse characteristics mono-phasic, 100 µs rise time, 1 ms duration.
Inter-pulse spacing 0-999 ms or 0-99 ms if controlled by Bistim. Unrestricted if controlled by external software.


Magstim Super Rapid² Plus¹

Rabid² can be used in single pulse, repetitive (rTMS) and session mode. Session mode enables the system to run series of separately defined trains of pulses from a single trigger.

0.50 Hz at 101-110% power output in single pulse mode
100 Hz at 0-48% power output in repetitive mode

NeurOne EEG system

The NeurOne system is designed to be used together with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The amplifier design and special software algorithms help to reduce artefacts in EEG caused by TMS stimulations.

The NeurOne system has comprehensive triggering interfaces, 64 EEG and 16 EMG channels, high sampling frequency and wide dynamic range, which enables virtually any evoked potential (EP) and event-related potential (ERP) measurements.

Visual stimulus system

Aalto TMS has a setup for psychophysical testing with Matlab, E-Prime and Presentation currently supported. The visual stimulus system is a cathode ray tube (CRT) monitor with wide luminance range and high refresh rate. Laboratory has a Bits# stimulus processor available making the use of higher bit depths available (14-bit black and white, 42-bit colour), among other things.


ASL cheek/chinrest 819-2155

Adjustable ASL cheek/chinrest is perfect for mounting test subject's head in place during visual studies and preventing test subject movement under stimulating coil during TMS studies.

Vacuum cushions

Vacuum cushions are filled with small granules which  take shape when the air is removed. The pads can be shaped again by opening the valve. For example, vacuum cushion provide excellent hand support during EMG studies. Vacuum cushions are available in two sizes: 55x30 cm and 65x55 cm.

Multi-adjustable Salli saddle chair with elbow rest gives you great support when doing TMS stimulations by hand.

Aalto Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Aalto TMS offers researchers unique possibilities for multi-modal neuroimaging techniques. The laboratory contains top-of-the-line electroencelography (EEG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) systems. Neuronavigated TMS-system with two stimulation units and various coils makes numerous TMS and rTMS examination setups possible. 64 ch EEG-system, specially designed for co-registration with TMS, can be used to map stimulus responses simultaneously.
