Aalto Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Aalto TMS offers researchers unique possibilities for multi-modal neuroimaging techniques. The laboratory contains top-of-the-line electroencelography (EEG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) systems. Neuronavigated TMS-system with two stimulation units and various coils makes numerous TMS and rTMS examination setups possible. 64 ch EEG-system, specially designed for co-registration with TMS, can be used to map stimulus responses simultaneously. The laboratory also contains stimulus system for visual studies with Matlab, E-Prime and Presentation softwares available.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Aalto TMS was inaugurated in early 2013. Our main research tools are two neuronavigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) systems (Bistim2 & Rapid2, Magstim) compined with electroencephalogram (EEG) mapping (NeurOne, Mega Electronics Ltd). The lab is based in Magneettitalo in Otaniemi, and the close proximity of MRI-scanner makes it easy to compine anatomical MRI-images to TMS neuronavigation and makes offline fMRI-TMS studies accessible. The laboratory locates in Otakaari 5 I, close to ANI facilities like AMI Centre and Aalto TMS. See all the relevant information and documents from the dropdown menus below.

Reservation calendar
All the ANI laboratories and some of the equipment (when used separately outside the lab) must be reserved before use. To make a reservation you need a username and password for the reservation system (anitime.aalto.fi).
Starting measurements
A new user has to complete four steps before measurements can be done at Aalto TMS. See details of these four steps below.
- Participate in Aalto TMS lab's user training and safety course. The course contains safety information and user training for the measurement systems. For information about the course and course schedules please contact [email protected]
- All studies involving human subjects must acquire a supporting statement from appropriate ethics committee (e.g. from Aalto University (available only from Aalto network), Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (in Finnish) or University of Helsinki).
- The scientific director accepts the research permission, which includes among others signature by the principal investigator, the names of people who are allowed to make reservations with this research permission, and the number of hours, which are also denoted in the financial obligation by the user.
- Laboratory can be reserved at the internet.
