The portion of people living in urban areas is ever increasing, while simultaneously, life in urban settings is changing as fast as ever before. New standards, demanded by the state of our environment and climate, require rapid change to everything in our society, down to the habits of every single individual. In order to adapt to these changes now and in the future, we need a more resilient society, which has the ability to withstand swift changes in the requirements and behaviors of its people.
Numerous researchers at Aalto University are trying to solve issues in our current urban societies, and help us prepare for the future. A large part of the focus lies in practical solutions, such as the management of resources and the movement of people, information and goods, but just as important are cultural change, understanding how our perceptions alter our actions and how economical triggers influence our decisions.
Urban Life is one of four research themes within the key research area Human-Centered Living Environments and facilitated by the Aalto Living+ Platform. The other four themes of Living+ are Inclusive Environments, Technological Breakthroughs and Human-Centered Design and Planning. The theme of Urban Life connects research on humans’ interaction in and with their living environment; the way we live, the way we move, the way we interact with our surroundings and how these change over time. The theme contains the five research subareas listed below.
Research areas within Urban Life:
- Perceptual and Experienced Environments
- Art and Cultural Heritage
- Water and Landscape
