Advanced and Functional Materials

Professor Simo-Pekka Hannula's Research Group for Advanced and Functional Materials conducts high-quality basic and applied materials research related to both current materials production and new advanced materials. The group is for its part responsible for teaching in materials science bachelor program and in functional materials master’s program.

The group's present areas of research include:

  1. controlling the microstructure and properties of new metal alloys and composites
  2. development of functional materials and coatings including nano powders and composites
  3. adaptive materials and their applications, especially magnetic shape memory alloys, their manufacturing, microstructure and properties

The core knowledge of the group is related to the characterization of phase- and microstructures and related material properties with different techniques. The key tools used by the group include transmission and scanning electron microscopes equipped with various analyzers and other material characterization methods (e.g. X-ray diffraction, nanoindentation, AFM, particle size analysis and thermal and magnetic properties measurements). The group consists of about 10 members (post-docs and senior researchers, doctoral candidates, master’s students and research assistants).
