Workshop Master, Aalto Takeout
Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business. We are committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. Aalto has six schools with nearly 11 000 students and a staff of more than 4000, of which 400 are professors. Our campuses are located in Espoo and Helsinki, Finland.
The Aalto University School of Art, Design and Architecture is now looking for a Workshop Master for a fixed-term position from 1 March 2019 to 30 June 2020. The position is located on the Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Espoo. The salary is determined according to the salary system for Finnish universities.
Your role and goals
You have excellent skills in AV technology and customer service. As Workshop Master, you will have the overall responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Takeout equipment lending service located in the school’s new building, Väre. This includes handling equipment checkout and returns, user support, equipment maintenance and inventory, maintenance of the loan service website, as well as any other communication, as necessary. You will collect feedback, suggestions and ideas from our customers and contribute to planning and implementing the service’s equipment purchases. You will also be responsible for keeping stock and ensuring that the equipment is in good working order: you will check the condition of all returned items, assess maintenance needs and, depending on your skills, do some minor repairs yourself. Your responsibilities include inventory and keeping track of all borrowed equipment using our web-based software.
Your network and team
As Workshop Master, you will work as part of the ARTS Infra unit, which supports the School of Arts, Design and Architecture’s teaching, research and artistic activities. It is a school-level service responsible for maintaining the school’s workshops, studios, ateliers and special workstation environments as well as directing their activities. ARTS Infra incorporates also the university’s AV equipment lending service, Aalto Takeout, which currently has two offices, Väre Takeout and Studios Takeout. Although you will work independently, you will be supported by a team of highly specialised professionals, whose areas of expertise range from metal work to glassblowing and 3D printing. The position gives you an opportunity to work independently while broadening your expertise.
The ARTS Infra workshop masters instruct the students and other workshop users in the use and choice of tools, materials, devices, and systems, and provide them with guidance in safe and ergonomic ways of working. In addition to providing user support, ARTS Infra makes the workshop schedules in collaboration with curriculum design staff and agrees with teaching staff upon the acquisition of materials used in teaching.
