The Department of Film, Television and Scenography is looking for a
Lecturer in Digital Design Methods
The position will be filled on a fixed term (5 years) or permanent basis at the (University) Lecturer or Senior University Lecturer level on the Aalto University lecturer track depending on the competence and merits of the applicant. The position will begin latest in August 2019.
Your role and goals
You will be developing the field of digital design methods at the department of Film, Television and Scenography. This field includes various computer-assisted design methods such as digital sketching and 3D modeling, as well as different forms of virtual scenography, visual effects (VFX/CGI) and digital visualization and presentation techniques. The interest in new emerging formats and technologies such as VR/AR is considered an asset. You will teach in the BA / MA Programmes in the Department, guide and assess student assignments and thesis works and take part in the student selections when needed. In addition, you will participate in the research and artistic activities. Depending on your strengths and specialization areas, you will work partly as a course teacher and partly as a coordinator of the courses. A large part of the education is organized jointly with other disciplines in small groups in the form of lectures, courses, practical exercises, workshops and productions. We also invite visiting professionals to share their knowledge on contemporary topics. We emphasise the well-being of the students along with efficiency of studies.
We enable your own artistic career and a portion of the work time will be allocated to your own artistic and/or academic activities. We are also willing to provide you with the opportunity to take some unpaid artistic leave, in order to keep up your professional career outside of Aalto.
Department of Film, Television and Scenography
The Department of Film, Television and Scenography (ELO Film School Finland) consists of two degree programmes. The film school was founded in 1959, and it is one of the oldest film schools in Europe and globally. The Degree Programme in Film and Television offers education in seven areas of specialization: Directing, screenwriting, film and television producing, film editing, cinematography, sound design, and documentary filmmaking. The Degree Programme in Design for Theatre, Film and Television offers three areas of specialization: Production Design, Design for Performing Arts and Costume Design.
In addition, the Department offers education in history of film and courses in research skills. The Department endorses practice-based research with questions emerging from experiences in artistic and production work. The research activities aim at producing new theoretical and practical knowledge, insights and approaches to filmmaking and scenography. The Department collaborates closely with the University of the Arts, Helsinki and with other national and international higher education institutions specialized in arts. Aalto Studios offer an excellent infrastructure for audiovisual education and research. New Aalto Studios building will be opened in the near future.
Your experience and ambitions
Master’s Degree and experience in using digital methods in film, TV, performing arts or new media are a requirement. Knowledge of the digital tools and workflows as well as the visual designer's work processes are required. We expect you to have good artistic merits and strong pedagogical skills. Additionally you should have excellent interpersonal skills, a vision about the future of the field and a strong interest in developing it in collaboration with other teachers in the department. Fluent English is needed. International networks, Finnish language skills and interest in research are considered as an asset. You should be able to guide students according to their personal artistic orientation. You must have skills and desire for open and active interaction with students.

The salary is determined based on experience and qualifications according to the salary system of Aalto University. The position is located in Otaniemi, Espoo in a new campus building made and designed for the School of ARTS.
