Doctoral Candidate in Photonics

The School of Electrical Engineering is one of the six schools of Aalto University. Our portfolio covers fields from natural sciences to engineering and information sciences. In parallel with basic research, we develop ideas and technologies further into innovations and services. We are experts in systems science; we develop integrated solutions from care of the elderly to space robotics. The School is an international unit with close to 60 professors and 2 000 full-time students, including over 200 doctoral students.

We are now looking for a talented and highly motivated

Doctoral Candidate in Photonics

Your goal will be to study optical properties of various nanomaterials, such as plasmonic nanoparticles, one-dimensional materials (e.g. carbon nanotubes, nanowires), two-dimensional layered materials (e.g. transition metal dichalcogenides), and their heterostructures for various photonic and optoelectronic applications. You'll get to conduct high quality research independently, and to work as an active member of the Photonics research group by taking part in project management duties and guiding M.Sc. students.

Research group
This research position will be supported by the Photonics group, led by Professor Zhipei Sun. The group mainly focuses on the study of physical properties of various nanomaterials (e.g. carbon nanotubes, nanowires, 2D materials) for photonics and optoelectronic applications. The group belongs to the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering at the School of Electrical Engineering, and is located in the Micronova Nanofabrication Center, the largest academic clean room facility in the Northern Europe. Your experience and skills
•    Master degree in physics, nanotechnology, or related topics is favorable for the position
•    Good command of English is necessary (please see the language requirements for Doctoral programme).

Salary and contract terms
The Doctoral Candidate position will be filled for 1–4 years. The expected starting salary is approximately 2440 €/month, and will increase according to performance over time. The contract includes occupational health benefits, holiday bonus, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. Preferable starting time is before summer 2019, but can be also negotiable.
