Course content:
The Aaltoliike project is a joint pilot project of the schools in Aalto University, where the focus of teaching is on innovative product design. Students work in teams, and the course requires strong commitment and motivation to study.
In the Aaltoliike project students work in small teams of three or four on designing a product. The products must be high-quality and high-grade in terms of design, technology and marketing, while also adhering to the principles of sustainability. Particular attention is paid to packaging, concepts, brand-building and marketing methods. The course is in real-time interaction with the times, the surrounding society and its phenomena, and strives to react to developments through its products.
The aim is to provide a concrete and genuine design task that encompasses all the stages of the product design process and allows for team work.
Course objective:
Course attendees jointly come up with and produce Aaltoliike product selection for the Aaltoliike store, which is updated annually. Students work in teams, combining their competences to produce more comprehensive, functional and saleable products. Innovativeness and pioneering design are the central objectives of product design.
Students who have completed the course master the skills of refining ideas into products, recognising business opportunities, and manufacturing prototypes on the basis of which they can formulate business plans and production methods. They also know the processes of product commercialisation and launching.
The idea is also that the course may organically lead to business partnerships between students (shared theses, shared business ideas).
