EIT Digital Master School

ICT Innovation

The EIT Digital Master School offers a two year education in which you can choose two universities in two different European countries, building a curriculum of technical courses combined with innovation and entrepreneurship studies.

Studies in Software and Service Architectures (SSA) major aim to educate the next generation of service designers and software architects capable of designing and engineering novel software systems to:

  • Drive the digitalization of businesses,
  • Create new businesses based on software intensive services,
  • Be responsible for the elicitation and definition of what software products and services IT companies should create in order to be successful; and
  • Be responsible for the processes and methods for the effective development of modern software systems.

The Software and Service Architectures major covers a wide range of topics from user studies, user centered development and business process modelling to software engineering, data analysis, software security and highly distributed software system. Students of the major will learn to work in teams to guide the software development process of complex information systems.

Study programme

The first year of the programme will be offered by Aalto University, University of Trento, or ELTE Budapest. It contains a number of core mandatory courses covering: (i) Complex information systems (ii) Advanced Software Engineering methods and tools, and (iii) Service Science.

During the second year of studies, the student chooses a spesialisation option offered in one of the four exit point universities: Aalto University, University of Trento, ELTE Budapest, or Technical University of Madrid UPM. The specialisation option offered at Aalto University is Software and Services for Smart Spaces.

Read more about Software and Services for Smart Spaces

Smart spaces refer to everyday working and living environments that are enriched with digital solutions. The solutions serve two kinds of business targets. First, they collect data from the physical space by analysing the context, people and their profiles, location and intentions, or some other environmental parameters. The data has value to many different stakeholders of the space. Secondly, the solutions provide an interface to a digital service in the space and at the situation. The solutions typically apply various sensor technologies, different devices for user interaction and back-end services that can be implemented locally or in the cloud. In EIT Digital Helsinki, the focus is very much in indoor positioning, way-finding and analytics, user interaction, and service design for smart spaces

The specialisation's courses can be selected e.g. from the following list:

  • Mobile Cloud Computing (5 ECTS)
  • Scalable Cloud Computing (5 ECTS)
  • Seminar or Research Seminar in Software and Service Engineering (5 ECTS)
  • Research Methods in Software and Service Engineering (5 ECTS)
