Doctoral Candidate in Machine Learning

The position belongs to the Aalto career system and the selected person will be appointed for a four-year fixed term appointment. There is no tuition fee for doctoral studies in Aalto University.

During the doctoral studies, the student will be instructed by Finnish Academy Research Fellow, Dr. Zhirong Yang, and officially advised by Prof. Samuel Kaski, who is the director of Finnish Centre of Excellence in Computational Inference Research COIN and Finnish Academy Professor.

Besides course studies, the appointed student will mainly perform research in the Large-Scale Neighbor Embedding project. The project aims to learn meaningful vector representation of massive data, which is the fundamental starting point in machine learning. Neighbor Embedding as an unsupervised learning method also delivers two important tools for data visualization and for cluster analysis, respectively. The student will also participate in other research activities in the Probabilistic Machine Learning group led by Prof. Samuel Kaski.


In addition to research work, persons hired are expected to participate in the supervision of students and teaching following the standard practices at the department.


The candidate should have a M.Sc. or equivalent in computer science, mathematics, or related disciplines, strong background in machine learning and excellent programming skills. Good command of English is a necessary prerequisite.

Compensation, working hours and place of work

The salary for the position starts at 2 424 EUR. In addition to the salary, the contract includes occupational health benefits, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The annual total workload of teaching staff at Aalto University is 1 600 hours. The position is located at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus.
