Doctoral Candidate in Human-Computer Interaction

The position belongs to the Aalto career system and the selected person will be appointed for a two year fixed term (with renewal for two years based on satisfactory progression of studies)

The position is funded by a new Academy of Finland 4 year project. The project is focused on the study of Digital Selfs: visualisations, crafted by users from their social and digital media to represent a facet of that users personality which can be viewed by others in immediate physical proximity (such as via wearable devices). The PhD is focused on the development of novel systems that employ social and digital media to support interpersonal communication between individuals.  The PhD student will work closely alongside two post-doctoral researchers to help complete the project plan. Students with an background in wearable devices, MobileHCI, Sociology, Human-Computer Evaluation, "app" store evaluation or large scale user studies are strongly encouraged  to apply.


In addition to research work, persons hired are expected to participate in the supervision of students and teaching following the standard practices at the department.


The candidate should have a M.Sc. in a relevant area (HCI, MobileHCI). Strong programming skills are a requisit requirement, and the student should be able to, or quickly learn how to, develop for Android wearable glasses or Microsoft Hololens. Good command of English, and good written skills are a necessary prerequisite.

Compensation, working hours and place of work

The salary for the position starts at 2 424 EUR . In addition to the salary, the contract includes occupational health benefits, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The annual total workload of teaching staff at Aalto University is 1 600 hours. The position is located at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus. Prefered start date of 1st September 2017
