two PhD level positions in the field of electrocatalysis

The Department of Chemistry and Materials Science at Aalto University has strong records in material development for energy applications.
ELCOREL (Electrochemical Conversion of Renewable Electricity into Fuels and Chemicals) is a multisite Innovative Training Network (ITN) funded within EU Horizon 2020 framework Programme (Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions). The project begins 01.05.2017 but the positions are available from September 2017. On the other hand, the application period for the selected candidates to the doctoral studies at the Aalto University School of Chemical Engineering begins 01.09.2017 and ends 02.10.2017 at 15:00 EET.
The ELCOREL Network (http://www.elcorel.org/) focuses scientific and technological aspects of the storage of renewable electricity into fuels and chemicals. The consortium joins five academic and two non-academic institution located in Czech Republic, Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Spain and Italy.
The aim of ELCOREL is to train young researchers in all scientific and technological aspects of the storage of renewable electricity into fuels and chemicals. The scientific aim is to develop and upscale novel catalysts meeting specific activity and selectivity targets for oxygen evolution and CO2 reduction. The involvement of two industrial partners ensures rapid application of the fundamental science in electrochemical technology.
The positions at the Aalto University are focused on development, characterization and implementation of advanced catalysts for electrochemical oxygen evolution and CO2 reduction. For one of the position particular attention will be paid to atomic layer deposition (ALD) approach and other relevant methods in synthesis of well-defined catalyst surfaces and their structural and electrochemical characterization. For the other position focus is on chemical engineering as well as structural and electrochemical characterization methods.
Successful candidates must hold a M.Sc. degree (or an equivalent) in Chemistry, Material Science or related field at the time of the contract commencement. Furthermore, (s)he must be in the first 4 years of his/her research carrier and meet the mobility eligibility criteria as outlined by the Marie Curie ITN rules i.e. may not have carried out their main activity in Finland for more than 12 month in the previous 3 years.
The ideal candidate has hands on experience in advanced synthesis, structural characterization techniques (TEM, SEM, Raman, XRD, etc.). Moreover, good knowledge on electrochemistry is an advantage. Good command of English is a necessary prerequisite.
